1227 DSU Symphony Band
Impressions

The Dixie State University Symphony Band, under the baton of Maestro Gary Caldwell, is back for two new performances this season.

In this broadcast we were pleased to record their “Impressions” concert from March 4, 2016.

We will be pleased to hear:

“Festival” by James Clifton Williams.  Written in 1961 this is considered to be one of Williams’ major works and it is bold and very dynamic.

“Arabian Dances” by Brian Balmages is rich in the amazing folk music from the Middle East

“Gilgamesh” by Gregory Rudgers takes much of its themes from Verdi’s “La Forza del destino” heard on our show 2 years ago.

“Metroplex” by Robert Sheldon takes us on a tour of New York City complete with a wild ride in a taxi.

Ralph Vaughan-Williams’ “Sea Songs” is very well known throughout the world as it includes 3 very famous sea songs: “Princess Royal,” “Admiral Benbow” and “Portsmouth.”

“Sunrise at Angel’s Gate” by Philip Sparke describes to the listener Sparke’s impression of Angel’s Gate during a visit to the Grand Canyon.

The concert concludes with “El Camino Real” by Alfred Reed as we hear the brilliant Spanish styles of the Flamenco, Jota and Fandango.
