Applications are invited for a position as a Research Fellow (or Senior Research Assistant if no PhD*) in development of methods to reduce the contamination risk from adventitious bacteria when producing platform sugars from the lignocellulosic fraction of municipal solid waste (MSW). The project is an industrial collaboration between the University of Southampton and Fiberight Ltd(www.fiberight.com).

Fiberight has created a circular economy solution to generate value-added products from MSW. The process involves thermo-mechanically treating the waste to recover 2 main fractions: recyclables and biomass. This biomass is then further processed to generate a soluble organic stream for anaerobic digestion (AD); and a clean solid lignocellulose which is converted to platform sugars via enzyme hydrolysis. This feasibility study aims to test innovative methods including the use of specialised additives and novel materials in pH control to increase the yields of extracted lignocellulosic pulp and solubilised organic matter. The product streams will be tested as substrates in enzyme hydrolysis assays, toxicity evaluations, biochemical methane potential tests and continuous AD studies.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate experience in similar types of laboratory-scale experimental work, and an insight into issues of scale-up to commercial application. A hands-on approach and excellent practical skills are required, along with a keen interest in developing ideas from proof-of-principle to implementation.

The salary will be commensurate with experience and with Level 4 of the University's Education, Research and Enterprise pathway. The appointment is for a 12-month period, starting at the beginning of August 2016.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Dr Sonia Heaven or Dr Dhivya Puri: sh7@soton.ac.ukor dhivya.puri@fiberight.co.uk.

Application procedure:

You should submit your completed online application form at www.jobs.soton.ac.uk. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above. If you need any assistance, please call Suzanne Stone (Recruitment Team) on +44 (0) 23 8059 4043. Please quote reference 748716AT on all correspondence.

*Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
