In line with the University of Southampton’s new Arts Strategy and the imminent opening of a new arts complex in the Southampton City Complex (supported jointly by the University, the Southampton City Council and the Arts Council), the department of English seeks to appoint to two new, permanent, full time posts in Drama and Theatre Studies.
The successful applicants will enhance our existing strengths in drama, scriptwriting, and performance studies, and will have opportunities to help develop collaborative links with the award winning Nuffield Theatre. The Nuffield runs a 450-seat professional producing theatre on campus, and will also run and programme the two new theatre spaces, workshop and rehearsal rooms in the new arts complex, and provide overall strategic leadership for the new venue, which also includes gallery and cinema facilities.
Applicants should have completed their PhD in a relevant field and show a developing profile of international excellence in research and publications, together with potential for attracting research funding. They will be expected to contribute to research-led teaching at all levels, and to the department’s strong and imaginative programme of public engagement. Practical experience in any aspect of theatre production or script writing, and an interest in practice-led research would be an advantage.
English at Southampton is active in all areas of research, including film and creative writing, and in all periods from the early medieval to the contemporary. It is ranked 5thin the Guardian League tables (2015) and in the top ten departments for research outputs in REF 2014; it has regularly led the field for student satisfaction in the NSS. We have research and teaching collaborations across the Faculty of Humanities (including Music, History and Archaeology) and also have strong cross-disciplinary research interests, including literature and science, and literature and finance. We have recently made two new appointments in literature and the visual arts, marking the move of the internationally renowned John Hansard gallery of contemporary art from the University’s Highfield campus to the new arts complex later this year. English also have good links with the acclaimed Turner Sims concert hall. The successful applicants will join a large and vigorous English department at a time of burgeoning opportunity and innovation in the Arts at the University of Southampton.
