Research Fellow

ODINE: Open Data Incubator for Europe

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow to work on the EU project Open Data Incubator for Europe (ODINE http://opendataincubator.eu). ODINE is a 30-month €7.8 million research and innovation programme funded by European Union’s Horizon 2020. Led by Dr. Elena Simperl (https://sites.google.com/site/elenasimperl/), the project will provide an accelerator programme for SMEs and startups to establish business in open data related areas, which is part of the Europe’s support for the next generation of digital businesses based on open data. SMEs and startups can submit proposals to ODINE call, and the project will organise proposal evaluations and selection process. If selected, the company will be funded up to €100,000 over six months to further develop their business based on open data. The key partners in ODINE project includes, Open Data Institute, Telefonica, The Guardian, Wayra (Telefonica Open Future), Fraunhofer IAIS and Open Knowledge Foundation. The main tasks for the applicants are to ensure that open data SMEs are able to make use of open data research and technology to grow their business.

The successful candidate will be based in the Web and Internet Science (WAIS) Research Group (www.wais.ecs.soton.ac.uk), which undertakes interdisciplinary research focusing on the science and technology of the Web and Internet.  WAIS is one of six research groups within Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton.  ECS is the UK’s leading academic unit integrating computer science, electronics, and electrical engineering.

You should possess a PhD (or equivalent qualification and experience) in Computer Science or related discipline and have established a strong pedigree in open data, as evidenced by publications in top quality journals and conferences.  In particular, expertise in one or more of the following areas will be an advantage: web science and web technologies, web analytics, linked and open data.

The post is for 1 year in the first instance.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
