Funded by Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), you will  join a programme involved in the development and application of novel droplet microfluidic based portable sensors for continuous monitoring of body chemicals.

The programme of research is a collaborative project between teams in the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment (Dr Xize Niu), Medicine (Professor Geraldine Clough), Health Science (Dr. David Voegeli) at the University of Southampton, and the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London (Professor Martyn Boutelle). The main aim of the project is to develop novel droplet microfluidic based portable/wearable sensor devices, and to measure continuously biomolecules or drug concentrations in body fluids, e.g. in interstitial fluids or cerebrospinal fluids.

The post will provide an excellent opportunity for working across the engineering – diagnostics/healthcare interface and will involve use of Southampton University's advanced micro and nanofabrication and bioengineering facilities.  You will work with the investigators, another research fellow on analytical chemistry and electrochemical sensor development, PhD students, a medical nurse, and clinicians from several hospitals.

You will have a PhD in engineering, physics or equivalent relevant experience (A practical background is essential), track record of publications, good communication skills, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Expertise in microfluidics, lab-on-a-chip, fluorescent detection, electrical or mechanical platform build-up would be advantageous.
