IT Support Assistant: MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit, (University of Southampton), Southampton

The Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit (formerly the Epidemiology Resource Centre and Environmental Epidemiology Unit respectively) was established in 2010 and is associated with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Southampton.  It is sited in a separate building at Southampton General Hospital.  The LEU studies the causes of chronic disease by epidemiological methods.  The main programmes of research are in the areas of musculoskeletal ageing, nutrition/lifelong health, and work and health. We are looking for an IT Support Assistant to serve the IT needs of the Unit's 80+ users. You will be required to troubleshoot both hardware and software issues, providing an efficient, communicative and friendly service to the users. You will also be required to familiarise yourself with specialised software and perhaps be called upon to help and train unit members in its use.

An intimate knowledge of Microsoft Windows Operating Systems and Office applications (Word, Powerpoint, Excel and Access) is an essential requirement for the post.  Qualified to ‘A’ level or equivalent standard in a subject allied to mathematics, scientific or information technology would be desirable.  A working knowledge of the following would be most beneficial – Networking; Internet technologies; printer and PC maintenance, installing, configuring and auditing standard unit software. Additional knowledge in any of the following will be advantageous: Statistical software (SPSS and Stata), Bibliographic software (Reference Manager, EndNote), Internet software (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Thunderbird), Security software (Anti-virus and Anti-spyware measures). There will be some requirement to create MS Access data entry forms and some database management.

The post is full-time for one year in the first instance, with the possibility of extension.  Salary will be in the range above per annum, dependent on qualifications and experience.
