We are seeking a motivated researcher with good quantitative research skills to work on an Economic and Social Research Council-funded project to improve the measurement of family indicators associated with child health and well-being in population-based studies in sub-Saharan Africa.

Based in the ESRC Centre for Population Change (www.cpc.ac.uk), Social Sciences, University of Southampton (www.southampton.ac.uk/socsci), the ability and a keen interest in spending time in South Africa and travelling is essential as you will be required to as much as 50% of time working at the Africa Centre and attending conferences and meetings.

The project has a particular focus on methods of longitudinal analyses and collecting information from and about non-resident parents, non-parental caregiving and children who migrate. It is a collaboration between two UK academic institutions: the University of Southampton and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and the Wellcome Trust- funded Africa Centre for Health & Population Studies in South Africa.

You will perform analyses of existing secondary data on families and households available from the Africa Centre Demographic Information System (www.africacentre.ac.za), as well as be responsible for managing and analysing data to be collected in a new family health survey and related evaluation activities.

You will have a PhD (or close to submission) or equivalent experience in demography, social statistics or related quantitative social science, excellent communication skills (both written and inter-personal) and experience of advanced statistical methods (the analyses of complex family and household data would be a considerable advantage).  Whilst previous experience of data collection would be desirable, you will be committed to gaining skills and experience of the multiple areas of project management including study design, data collection, validation and evaluation, and data archiving and retrieval. A background in family studies and the interrelated areas of health and/or psychology would be advantageous.
