These UAF opportunities in Cancer Research will drive cutting-edge research under the categories of:

Discovery science;

Cancer modelling;

Therapeutic target discovery;

Biomarker validation;

In vivo and first-in-man studies;

Inter-disciplinary cancer research applying informatics, mathematical or physical sciences approaches.

These Fellowships will suit candidates from biomedical, biological and physical sciences, who have a clear focus on cancer research and where possible align to strategic priorities in haemato-oncology and signal transduction, cancer immunology, structural biology applied to cancer research, and interdisciplinary cancer research utilising physical/engineering/informatics approaches.

The goal of this fellowship programme is to expand the portfolio of cancer research at the University of Leeds, and build future leadership in this key area of biomedical research within a thriving academic environment linked to one of the largest cancer care centres in Europe.

A major strength in Leeds is the access to a wide resource of clinical expertise and patient samples, and fundamental research embedded with clinical resources to enhance translation will be particularly welcome.

The University of Leeds provides a thriving research environment with a strong investment programme focused on driving an integrated biomedical research agenda, within which Cancer Research is a principal focus.  Our existing world-leading research activities span the spectrum from fundamental discovery science through to applied research for immediate patient benefit.  As such there are established programmes in structural biology, cancer cell biology including early disease, cancer genetics, precision medicine, and cancer immunotherapy across a range of tissue types.  Particular areas of strength lie in haemato-oncology, cancer immunology, and cancer bioinformatics and in these areas further recruitment is a priority.  Within both discovery and biomarker research an area of increasing focus and development need is in signal transduction research in particular in relation to haemato-oncology and cancer immunology.  Leeds is a Cancer Research UK Centre, as well as an Experimental Cancer Research Centre, which specifically support cancer research infrastructure across the NHS trust as well as the university.

These cancer research activities sit within a wider biomedical research community with outstanding track records in clinical and medical genetics, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal diseases and oral biology.  Leeds is at the forefront of structural biology research with the Astbury Centre, Faculty of Biological Sciences, and physical and engineering sciences applied to biomedical research. With rapidly evolving integration across these areas a focus on cross-Faculty and multidisciplinary collaborations will be encouraged, as well as appointments that can maximize integration with our clinical facilities.

We are looking to recruit a number of highly motivated individuals with excellent research profiles who are capable of developing and leading innovative research projects and programmes.  The fellowships will appeal to a broad range of candidates from the biomedical and biological sciences, who have a clear focus on cancer research and where possible align to our strategic priority areas such as haemato-oncology, including signal transduction, cancer immunology, structural biology applied to cancer research, and interdisciplinary cancer research utilising physical/engineering/informatics approaches.

Applications are welcomed from clinically and non-clinically qualified applicants.

For Clinical Posts:

We actively encourage applications from specialty trainee level to those who already hold specialist registration.

If you are clinically qualified these Fellowships provide an opportunity to develop on your existing academic experience and establish a clinical academic career.

The nature of the clinical / academic workload profile for individual roles will be determined by your current level of specialist training and agreement with our local NHS organisations, with whom we work in close partnership.

University Clinical Academic Fellows will be required to hold the appropriate level of NHS honorary contract.

As part of the application process you will be required to upload the following documents:

1.    A CV;

2.    A list of publications;

3.    A statement detailing your research and academic plan (no more than 2 sides of A4).  As part of the selection process, account will be taken in relation to your research and academic plan, in particular the impact of this and the strategic fit to the University.

Selection events are expected to be held on the 1st and 2nd of December 2015.  Exact details and dates will be confirmed at the short listing stage.
