It may not be noticeable, but relative indoor humidity levels have a direct impact on home heating and cooling. In this post, J & M Air Conditioning & Heating explores how humidity and temperature go hand in hand, and how your HVAC system can help you keep your home comfortable for the season.

How Humidity Impacts Temperature

Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air. During warm days, the droplets absorb heat and make the air feel warmer than it really is — that is, the higher the relative indoor humidity level, the warmer the air would feel. During winter, the air is much drier because cold air is a natural dehumidifier. This is why symptoms of dryness such as dry and flaky skin, throat irritation, and itchy eyes are common during the season. Static electricity also tends to build up when the air is dry, which is why static electric shocks are also common during winter.

HVAC Systems and Humidity Control

HVAC systems are designed to condition and distribute indoor air. More than just providing comfort by controlling temperature, it also regulates air quality, which happens to include humidity levels. During the summer season, air conditioners do most of the heavy lifting by removing moisture in the air along with the heat. The ideal relative indoor humidity level should be between 30% and 50%, and if the air conditioner can’t maintain this level, a dehumidifier can be run to pick up the slack.

During the winter season, it’s a different set of conditions because the air is drier. It helps to have a hygrometer, a device that measures relative indoor humidity levels, in your home. Your thermostat may already have this feature, or you can easily buy one online. Before running a humidifier, check your hygrometer first. In some households, daily activities such as cooking and bathing release enough moisture to balance out humidity levels. In such conditions, a humidifier may not be necessary.
