So, I’m sitting in the Millstone Family Restaurant yesterday morning, and I ran into my ole friend Dick.  Notice, Dick, I didn’t say OLD friend, I said OLE friend.  Dick let me know that he wishes I would do more blogs more regularly.  That hit my heart.  People actually like my blogs. Do I dare say LOVE?  So, with that said…..

OK, it took EVERY ounce of my being to put that picture on here, given my complete contempt and hatred for clowns!!!

Your favorite blog is sponsored by Pierson Ford in Aberdeen, SD.

1.  IT’S FUNNY TIME!!!

This is something I would do.  And might!!

So, that’s the sound I heard coming from the nursing home.

Cat lover’s will appreciate this one.

I’M SHATTERED RIGHT NOW!!

I need to clean my computer.  I have POOH all over it.

Here I thought I forgot to shower for the last week. THIS is what it was.

2.  V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N!!!!!

Starting this Saturday at 4:00, I am on vacation for the entire next week.  What are we doing?  Well, on Labor Day, the wife and kids and I are going to see the Minnesota Twins play a game against the Kansas City Royals at Target Field in Minneapolis.  OK, you may be wondering why we are spending money to go watch a horrible team like the Twins are this year.  Here’s why.  My beautiful wife doesn’t choose sporting events very often, and she LOVES watching the Twins play, so that’s why we’re going.

And then, Wednesday morning my son Mitchell and I are heading to……HOLLYWOOD!!!  Yes, that Hollywood.  In California.  Why?  I’m doing a couple of screen tests, because I heard they were looking for overweight, not very good looking 52 year olds for the movies.  Okay, maybe not.

My son Mitchell is helping me cross another event off of my bucket list.  We are going to see a concert.  Who?  I’m so doggone excited!!

E.L.O. is one of my favorite bands of all time.  They haven’t appeared in our country in 30 years, and God only knows if they will make it back.  They actually had a tour called “Zoom” back in, I believe 2004, but it was cancelled before they started it.  And, YES, you guessed it.  I HAD TICKETS PURCHASED.

I am a huge fan of Jeff Lynne and this band.

We are also going to Universal Studios for a day.  Mainly to hang out in Springfield with my favorite TV family.

They have an entire section of the park dedicated to “The Simpsons.”  Mitchell and I will be in cartoon heaven that day.

I am letting Mitchell pick one place he wants to go.  He did.  But I’m not sure I can stomach it.

With respect to my handsome son, It doesn’t sound too bad.  It features artifacts and other things from some of the biggest killers and murderers in the world.  Plus they have facts about them and other “oddities.”  I will update you after we get back to let you know if I barfed halfway thru.

3.  You say you don’t know The Electric Light Orchestra?  Or E.L.O.?  I bet you do!

Or how about this classic!!!

And finally, one of my personal favorites from E.L.O. (I may wet myself when they play this one.)

4.  Speaking of Hollywood, I was devastated to hear to hear of the death of a fantastic actor and human spirit, Gene Wilder.  Normally when a celebrity dies it doesn’t affect me.  But I was genuinely sad all day long when I heard the news.

That probably has something to do with the fact that Gene Wilder starred in my second favorite movie of all time.

Who didn’t love “Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory”!!!  It’s a staple of my childhood!

But in addition to that classic, Gene Wilder made a lot of movies his own, even when he wasn’t the “main star” of the movie.  Like this genius Mel Brooks movie.  I also found out this week that Gene Wilder wrote this movie with Mr. Brooks.  You learn something new every day.

If you have never seen the Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor comedies, you need to find them.  These next two movies are classics!!  And these two guys played so well of of each other!

Gene Wilder was 83 and had suffered from Alzheimers.

Gene Wilder is one of those actors that come around very rarely whose movies speak for themselves.

5.  Interesting war of words in Nashville, TN.  And they are words that I agree with.  There is a country star who plays the “twang” and “traditional” country that I absolutely love.  His name is Sturgill Simpson.  He was good friends and tour mates of Merle Haggard.  Merle respected Sturgill’s music so very much.

Well, recently the Academy Of Country Music announced that they would hand out a yearly award named after Merle Haggard.  This completely set off Sturgill Simpson.  Why?  Because he is super angry because Nashville basically shut out Merle Haggard and other classic artists because of the “new artists” who were taking over the city.  Merle Haggard couldn’t PAY for a hit song after the late 80’s.  Music labels in Nashville avoided the likes of Haggard and George Jones, Tammy Wynette and others.  And now Sturgill is livid that they want to use Merle’s good name with a good award, but did nothing for him when he was alive!!!

I completely agree with Sturgill.  I have been an advocate for the legends of country music.  In fact, keep watching here, because some big news is coming soon.  I find it a crying shame that the artists that made country music what it is today are not being respected by country radio and Nashville in general.  I thank Sturgill Simpson for standing up and saying what millions of other classic country fans are thinking!!!

6.  OK, on to the egghead Colin Kaepernick.  He is the San Francisco 49’ERS player who decided it was more proper for him to sit on his butt and not stand for the national anthem.  He is standing up for the injustices of the world.  Injustices that are true injustices, but have been around for decades.  Oddly enough, Kaepernick stood up for the national anthem when he was a STARTER in the NFL, but now that he’s on the bench and may not play he needs the attention.

Because of those who fought for our freedom, Colin has the right to say and do what he wants.  But that also gives ME the right to say what I want to this egghead.

Mr. Kaepernick, you are correct.  There are some horrible things going on in this world. Racism is showing it’s ugly ugly head again.  There are horrible things happening to good people.  But you are doing it wrong.  You are a multi-millionaire who lives in a multi-million dollar mansion.  OPEN UP YOUR WALLET, BUDDY.  Give some of your money toward causes for those who are treated unfairly.  Build houses for people who are struggling.  Start a scholarship in your name that helps minorities get to college.  DO SOMETHING THAT WILL HELP PEOPLE, NOT TEAR THEM APART.

But then again, you need the attention so that another team picks you up when the 49’ERS most likely drop your butt in the next few days.

And watch your comments about the police.  They are going to be the ones protecting you if something happens at your home or in the stadium.

The flag and the Star Spangled Banner are sacred.  Thousands of gallons of blood were spilled around the world for that flag to fly today.  Many Americans left our country and came back in boxes because they wanted to protect the flag, the Star Spangled Banner and other freedoms that come with our country.

Open your wallet. Shut your mouth. Stand up.  Show respect.  Honor the country that has allowed you to be set for life.

7.  Whatever happened to the cast of E.T.?  When “E.T. The Extra Terrestrial” came out in theaters, I saw it THIRTEEN TIMES in the theaters of Aberdeen, SD.  All of my friends and family wanted to see it so I kept going with them. I love this movie.  But, it came out many many years ago. So what is the cast doing now?  Let’s find out.

We all remember the sites and sounds of this great movie.

Henry Thomas played E.T.’s best friend on earth named Elliot.  I can still hear E.T. saying “EL…EEE….OTT….”  Henry Thomas is now 44 and still acts in Hollywood.

Probably the most famous of the cast was Drew Barrymore who stole our hearts as “Gertie.”  Obviously, Drew is still active in movies and TV.  Ready for this?  Ready to feel old?  Drew Barrymore is now 41.  YIKES.

The other child in the family, Michael, was played by Robert Mac Naughton.  He is now 49.  Pushing fifty….SHEESH…

The incredibly beautiful Dee Wallace Stone played the Mom of the family.  Her name on the show was Mary.  She is still acting and, hard to believe, is 67 years old.  And still looks so very beautiful.

And finally, Peter Coyote played “Keys” the bad guy who was trying to catch E.T.  He is now 74 years old.

It’s unreal that everybody around me is aging, and I’m staying young.  Well, at least in my immature attitude.

8.  JOKE OF THE DAY!!

A man and a beautiful woman were having dinner in a fine restaurant.  Their waitress, taking another order at a table a few paces away suddenly notices that the man was slowly sliding down his chair and under the table.  But the woman acted unconcerned.  The waitress watched as the man slid all the way down his chair and out of sight under the table.  Still, the woman dining with him appeared calm and continued to eat her meal and drink her wine.  After the waitress finished taking the other table’s order, she came over to the table and said to the woman, “pardon me, ma’am, but I think your husband just slid under the table.”  The woman calmly looked up at her and replied nicely, “no he didn’t.  My husband just walked thru the door.”

HAVE A TERRIFIC WEEK!!
