Raspberry Pi is unlike other digital device companies in that Raspberry Pi seems as if it’s about the computer, not the profit. Following on from the success of previous devices, Raspberry Pi is releasing an even less expensive device, the Pi Zero. The price of the Pi Zero is $5US and aims to give people their first taste of programming.

Knowing how to use the software on a computer is different to know how to use a computer. The computer and how to program it isn’t something unknowable or incomprehensible. Programming literacy is gaining importance in education and the workplace. Knowing a little about programming, about how computer hardware works can help individuals to do more with their machines that use them as an expensive word processor or communications device.

The Raspberry Pi Zero features a Broadcom BCM2835 application processor, a 1GHz ARM11 core, 512MB of LPDDR2 SDRAM, A micro-SD card slot, a mini-HDMI socket for data and power, an unpopulated 40-pin GPIO header (identical pinout to Model A+/B+/2B), unpopulated composite video header and is the smallest Pi device, measuring in at 65mm x 30mm x 5mm. According to Raspberry Pi, the core is 40% faster than the original Raspberry Pi 1.

Raspbian is used to run the Raspberry Pi Zero and can run user’s favourite applications. Minecraft, Scratch and Sonic Pi are some of the applications that the Raspberry Pi Zero can run. Raspberry Pi are giving away the Pi Zero with the official Raspberry Pi magazine, The Mag Pi. In the UK, the Pi Zero is available from The Pi Hut and Pimoroni. For users in the US, Adafruit and Micro Center are stocking the Pi Zero. Accessories are available for users in the Swag Store. A pack is on offer that contains a mini-HDMI and micro-USB adapter for £4 or free with a subscription to The MagPi magazine.

Money is a consideration for a lot of people in the developed world. Advertising has a tendency to trick people into believing some products are at a “low price”, use terms like “affordable” without consideration, and when something is said to be “only this much…”, That price could be too much for them. Raspberry Pi is a company that seems to understand that people don’t have an unlimited supply of money and what’s inexpensive for one person could break the bank of another. The evolution of devices like the Raspberry Pi is interesting to watch and where this idea will go into the future is something to watch.
