Sustainability and carbon Net Zero are high on the agenda for governments and organisations around the globe.

With COP26 being hosted in Glasgow this year, it’s the perfect time to shine a light on what businesses must do to contribute.

In 2015 all member states of the United Nations created and adopted the ‘Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – a set of 17 objectives to be achieved by 2030 to tackle poverty, inequality and of course climate change.

Our own CEO Jon Lewis was one of 12 Chief Execs of major companies that co-authored a letter to UK Cabinet in 2019 leading the charge to host this event and grab the opportunity to be a beacon to the rest of the world in achieving these goals at such a crucial time.

In fact Capita Plc actively adopts many of the SDGs as part of our responsible business strategy and wears them like a badge of honour.

A mammoth task

Achieving carbon net zero by 2030 will be a mammoth task. 51 billion tonnes of greenhouses gases are pumped into the atmosphere every year. Reducing that to zero will require innovation across every sector, new businesses and old, and an overhaul of how we as humans consume. It’s a fascinating and exciting subject to delve into, and the urgency that faces our planet has brought out some incredibly talented intelligent minds to help shape today and tomorrow. 2 good resources, if you’re interested in digging a little deeper are ‘How To Avoid A Climate Disaster’ by Bill Gates, along with Breakthrough Energy, his investment foundation focussing on green innovation, and also Ellen MacArthur Foundation developing and promoting the concept of ‘Circular Economy’.

Innovative steps towards sustainability

Here at Capita TI we’re proud of our client base and are lucky enough to work with some of the world’s largest organisations, including many in the Humanitarian Aid and Public Sectors. These clients rely on multilingual communication in order to deliver crucial services, whether that be supporting displaced refugees, training volunteers on how to clear land mines from war-torn regions, or here in the UK delivering health care, social care or legal services to a multilingual population.

As the world stood still in 2020, we were able not only to keep these crucial interpreting services fulfilled, but also to take advantage of an invaluable opportunity to drastically reduce carbon output through the implementation of our remote interpreting technology, LiveLINK.

We believe this is a huge positive shift in behaviour across not only our client base, but the face-to-face interpreting market the world over.

For both us and our clients it means;

Increased cost effectiveness

Access to wider range of resources and expertise from around the globe

Increased reliability and fulfilment

Opportunity to further innovate

Reduced liability risks

And, crucially in 2020…

Our interpreters traveled

36,000 miles less,

as our customers used

LiveLINK remote interpreting

Reducing

13 tonnes

of CO2

emissions

Equivalent to the effect of

7,500 Sqm

of

Tropical rainforest

If this is what we managed to achieve as one relatively small part of a much larger organisation, imagine what can truly be achieved on a global scale.
