Community leaders, Friends, and Business Associates throughout Berkeley County and the Eastern Panhandle plan to recognize Pam Wagoner, owner of The Depot Florist in Martinsburg, as a 2017 Distinguished Citizen in the Shenandoah Council’s Potomac District of the Boy Scouts of America.
On Tuesday, March 14th, Pam will become the 22nd Distinguished Citizen to be recognized in Berkeley County since the founding of this important fund-and-friend raising program of the Boy Scouts.
Dinner committee planners, made up of past awardees and many others who have supported the Scouting programs in Berkeley County over the years, feel they have picked a “real winner” for recognition this year. Two prominent “old scouts” on the committee, Richard “Richie” McCune and Bonn “Buzz” Poland, both with a long family history in support of Scouting, feel that Pam is “the” excellent choice. “Pam is very well-known for supporting business and community growth in our city and throughout the community for a long, long time” notes McCune. Poland added that “Pam has been the key player in the growth of her Martinsburg business, and has served the Martinsburg and District Rotary clubs, her church, and many other organizations for many years”.
Doug Band, Potomac District Scout Executive notes that “Pam is regarded as one of the main “go-to” persons/florists in the area as she has supported Rotary, United Way, and many other community non-profit events in the area”. “It’s an added plus that Pam is the mother of an Eagle Scout, and has had a longstanding appreciation of the value of our local and national scouting programs”, according to Band, who along with his sons is also an Eagle Scout. Pam considers her son’s Eagle achievement to be one of the family’s fondest memories.
Pam became involved in community service through her church, Trinity Episcopal in Martinsburg, and her sons. When they became involved in the church youth programs, Boy Scouts, 4-H, and the Hedgesville Band boosters, she jumped right in. It was being involved with her sons’ organizations that she said she learned the value of youth outreach and development. Pam has also participated in the Read Aloud program for 18 years. She has been a vital part of the Martinsburg (Noon) Rotary club, where she was President, and now serves in a District Leadership position. She certainly lives the Rotary International motto: “Service above Self”. Pam recently completed a term as President, and remains on the Board, of CCAP/Loaves and Fishes. The “Depot Florist” business that Pam owns is well-known throughout the community, and has operated for over 20 years.
Wagoner will be honored as Scouting’s 2017 Distinguished Citizen on Tuesday, March 14, 2017, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, Martinsburg. To participate as a table host or to attend this March 14th event, Band can be reached at (304) 940-1201 or his email doug.band@scouting.org.
