MIIT Accreditation

Since late 2014, members of our global senior management team in Beijing, Helsinki, and Austin, have been working with local Chinese officials and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of the People’s Republic of China on becoming one of the first western new gTLD registry operators to be accredited in China.

2014: A YEAR IN REVIEW
2014:回望去年
2014 was a big year for the Domain Name Industry, especially with the rapid influx of thousands of new domain extensions in which applicants from all over the world applied for, won, and launched, all throughout the year in what is becoming a shifting landscape for what is right of the dot. For TLD Registry, 2014 provided its fair share of successes, insights, and perspectives of this landscape shift, and how the domain name industry is changing. Let’s take a quick look back at some highlights of 2014 for TLD Registry.

January/February: The first two months of 2014 was an exciting time for TLD Registry. The Dot Chinese Online and Dot Chinese Website applications had been approved by ICANN, the sunrise period went into effect, the go-live schedule was announced, and it was just a matter of time until these fully-Chinese domain extensions would be available to the general public.
1月／2月：2014年的前两个月对于域通联达来说极为刺激。“.在线”以及“.中文网”的申请获得了ICANN（互联网名称与数字地址分配机构）的批准，紧接着进入了日升期，公布了go-live计划，对于当时来讲，这些全中文的域名后缀进入公众市场只是时间的问题。
March: This was landrush month, beginning on the 20th of March. On the second day of landrush, TLD Registry hosted its premium domain name live auction event at the ritzy “China Rouge” private members club at the Galaxy Hotel & Casino in Macau.

A large crowd of participants ranging from beginner and veteran domain name investors, to registrar partners and friends, gathered together for a historic auction. 33 of 39 auction lots sold, resulting in over USD$182,000 in premium domain name sales. Also, China’s central government backed the adoption of the new TLDs, introducing a new national policy on March 3, 2014 that mandates the use of Chinese domain names for all Chinese government websites. Last, but not least, over 21,000 names in Dot Chinese Online and Dot Chinese Website were registered by representatives cooperating with China’s State Commission Office for Public Sector Reform (SCOPSR).
3月：这个月从20号开始，属于抢注期。在抢注期的第二天，域通联达在澳门银河酒店的私人会员酒廊举办了优质域名现场拍卖活动。从刚入行的域名投资者到著名投资人，从注册商伙伴到其他各界朋友，大家聚集在一起参加了此次具有历史性的域名拍卖会。39次拍卖中有33次被竞拍成功，域通联达也因此获得了182,000美金的优质域名拍卖收入。同时，中国中央政府也在支持着新通用顶级域名，2014年3月出台了一项全国性政策，要求所有中国政府性网站使用中文域名。最后但也是最重要的一点是，超过21,000个“.在线”和“.中文网”中文域名被和中央机构编制委员会办公室合作的相关代表注册。

netizens, and the Internet in general! Within 50 minutes of General Availability, Dot Chinese Online rocketed to the global number 4 position for New gTLDs, and Dot Chinese Website shot to global number 9 for New gTLDs. This ranking was calculated by the number of Domains Under Management (DUMs).

May/June/July: During the first few months of general availability, we continued to sign up dozens of new registrar partners in China and around the world. We participated in XinNet’s partner conference held in several cities across China, and met hundreds of their resellers.

In June, during ICANN’s 50th meeting in London, TLD Registry hosted a pleasure cruise on the River Thames (“Chinese Domains on the Thames”) for many of our business partners and friends.

August/September: TLD Registry and selected partners embarked on a multi-week trip to China, during which time TLD Registry announced its Chinese Domain Ambassador program, met with several Chinese registrars, and hosted a Mid-Autumn Festival celebration. After the successful China trip, TLD Registry headed over to India to give a presentation for World Domain Day. Registrations in Dot Chinese Online and Dot Chinese Website continue to rise, especially for multi-year registrations.

October: TLD Registry headed down to Austin, Texas and then on to Phoenix, Arizona, road-tripping onward to Los Angeles, California to attend ICANN 51. TLD Registry hosted a party in Beverly Hills, and met with several registrar partners and others during this month. We spent the last half of the month in China, where we welcomed our new China General Manager, Mr. Jin Wang, and hosted an “office warming party” for our brand new Beijing, China office.

In December, Sedo released its “Top 10 Highest Domain Name Sales in 2014 at the World’s Largest Marketplace,” along with the “Top 10 List of Highest IDN New gTLDs.” Not only did TLD Registry’s Dot Chinese Online (.在线) headline at the No. 1 spot, but both Dot Chinese Online (.在线) and Dot Chinese Website (.中文网) scored 10/10 on the “Top 10 List of Highest IDN New gTLDs.” Total sales of the top 10 IDNs were over USD $120,000.

Also in December, TLD Registry and Right of the Dot (headed by industry heavyweights Michael Berkens and Monte Cahn) formed a Domain Name Industry “Dream Team.” Our organically-created partnership with ROTD is based on this objective — to further develop awareness, investment, and branding opportunities represented by Chinese domains, to a predominantly western audience.

As 2014 came to a close, registrations continued its upward pace. Successful parties, festivals, conferences, and trips were looked back on fondly with an appreciation of the Chinese culture and business practices. Most importantly, 2014 provided a piece of mind knowing that fully-Chinese domains were available to millions of Chinese netizens who want to use the Internet in their own native language. The last two months of 2014 were also spent in preparation of TLD Registry’s own Chinese Domaining Masterclass that would be presented at NamesCon, in January 2015.

January 2015: TLD Registry spent January attending NamesCon in Las Vegas, presenting the
world’s first, and currently the world’s only Chinese Domaining Masterclass, complete with a 120-page binder curriculum that covers everything the western domainer would need to know as they pursue registration activity in Chinese domain names. The masterclass saw huge success with well over 50 graduates!

February 2015: In February, the TLD Registry executive team attended ICANN 52 in Singapore, and met with several registrar partners, industry leaders, and the Domain Name Association.

Luke received his bachelor’s degree in marketing from Florida International University, and has worked as a marketing consultant at one of China’s largest social communication platforms, WeChat.
