A Quick Sunscreen Buying Guide
Sunscreen is the best anti-aging skincare we must own. If you are prone to breakouts or have sensitive skin, you will likely know from experience that finding the right sunscreen can be a challenging task. Some sunscreens break you out, wear off, leave some ugly white-ish cast, ball up etc.
How to pick the one from those with weird labels: SPF thing, PA thing, mineral, chemical or physical thing, UVA, UVB thing?
What ingredients in sunscreen to avoid?
I will try to conclude it in a few lines so that we enjoy can Sephora Sun Safety Kit review together even more!
UVA, UVB?
UVB = Burn (cause sunburn + blocked by window glass)
UVA = Aging (we can’t feel it but it can cause all aging problems + and can pass through window glass)
SPF?
SPF is an indication for UVB or sunburn protection. Minimum requirement by FDA is SPF 15. American Academy of Dermatology recommends at least SPF 30 (as of June 2016).
Board-spectrum?
Broad-spectrum protection means it will protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
Waterproof?
Recently, they will use these terms: Water Resistant (effective for up to 40 minutes in water) or Very Water Resistant (effective for up to 80 minutes in water).
PA+++?
PA followed by plus signs are Japanese rating of the UVA protection of a sunscreen. PA+++ indicates the highest level of UVA protection. PA+ means some UVA protection. North Americas do not have indication for UVA yet. But you can look for the ingredients below.
UVA active ingredients?
Look for zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, avobenzone, butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, Mexoryl SX, or Tinosorb.
Mineral Vs Chemical?
Classic sunscreens use chemical (non-mineral, traditional, syntactic) active ingredients designed to absorb and dissipate UVA/UVB rays.
Mineral sunscreens use mineral (or physical) active ingredients such as Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide to scatter and reflect UVA/UVB rays.
Sunscreen ingredients options for special needs?
Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are preferred for sensitive skin, rosacea, or children.
People concern about?
May be Retinyl palmitate and Oxybenzone?

Every year Sephora releases their Sephora Sun Safety Kit in summer (regularly in May). It is a multibrands set full of tons of sunscreen, sun care and SPF beauty samples. There is no subscription required. This set is always the greatest value and the most popular of all Sephora Favorites kits. This set always sells out really quick. Every year Sephora will donate part of the sale to charity.
I was lucky to grab brand new Sephora Favorites Sephora Sun Safety Kit 2016 for $32 (a $127 Value) in my local Sephora store last week (NOT JCP). This Sephora Favorites Sephora Sun Safety Kit 2016 is NOT a Sephora inside JCPenney Sun Safety Kit 2016. I never came across that one myself but it may be 12pc for $27.
This year 2016 Sephora Sun Safety Kit contains 15pc and Sephora will donate $20 from the sale of this kit to the Skin Cancer Foundation!
It comes in a big plastic bag yellow and mint shade. There is a little orange booklet listed all production information.

An oil-free, skin-perfecting “blemish balm” that creates a flawless finish as it moisturizes and nourishes the skin.
IcanGWP: There are two BB cream products in this set. Both of them are mineral sunscreen. Great job Sephora! Forget about rich tinted moisturizer or heavy BB cream, this product is very sheer. It has a lotion-like texture. Sheer and adding just a little bit of soft luminous shine to my skin, lovely BB. There is no fragrance or alcohol. There’s some skin lightening ingredient in it. Good for early treatment for little spots. Many reviewers on Sephora site mentioned that it is liquidy, watery and contains glitter. There’s micro glitter in it, barely see it. It will show in sunlight though.
If you are looking for a light coverage foundation with sunscreen and can also be used as one step moisturizer too, you may give it a try. The amount of SPF ingredient might not be for everyone especially prone to breakout skin. It doesn’t clog mine. There’s only one shade. I think that it is translucent but you may want to test it out first.

An ultra-light, two-in-one antioxidant sunscreen and hydrator. This user-friendly daytime essential provides extra-sheer protection against UVA/UVB rays as it soothes and hydrates skin. Rich in antioxidants to protect skin from free radical damage, this oil-free formula keeps your complexion safe and healthy-looking.
IcanGWP: This is the most expensive sample in this kit. Many reviewers mentioned about greasiness, irritation and skin breakouts. This product contains 5 chemical active ingredients. Good chemical sunscreen needs multiple ingredients combined in order to achieve broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection. However, people that their skin can take it really love it. The average review on Sephora site is 4.1 (higher than most items in this kit). This product is fragrance-free.
Sometimes we should stick with short ingredient list beauty products. But for PTR, it has long been known as a pioneer in highly effective anti-aging skincare. He is more adventurous and willing to take a risk. Paula’s Choice is also a good example of this style. If the maximum strength allowance in skincare is 2%, you will see these two brands offering it. Most luxury brands will avoid using possible irritant cocktail. What is your style? Can your skin handle physical strength skincare?

IcanGWP: There are six products in this kit with SPF 50. This is the only one moisturizer with SPF 50. It is also the highest SPF (protects UVB) and PA+++ (protects most UVA) too. This product contains great ingredients a decent moisturizer should have. If you really concern about getting great board spectrum sunscreen moisturizer, this is the one – period. Oh and it is fragrance free too. As you can see from the description, it stays on the surface. It somehow leaves slight shine on my combination skin. It can be easily cover by any powder, wear well under makeup. It doesn’t break me out. This is one of the best Kate Somerville product I have tried. It is well worth having.
According to EWG.org:
“The FDA has long contended that SPF higher than 50 is “inherently misleading” (FDA 2007). Australian authorities cap SPF values at 30; European and Japanese regulators at 50 (Osterwalder 2009b), and Canada allows a maximum of “50+”. In 2011, the FDA proposed a regulation to prohibit labels higher than SPF 50+, but the agency has not completed work on this rule and put it into force.”
Algenist Sublime Defense Anti-Aging Blurring Moisturizer SPF 30 review | Full size $75
A whipped moisturizer that protects from air pollution and UV damage while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for a smooth, radiant complexion.
IcanGWP: This is a very smart formula sunscreen one can put on the counter. I hope that more cosmetics company will push this style of skincare to the market. Mineral sunscreen will have a longer shelf life – widely used. But when it comes to facial products, mineral sunscreen ingredients leave white cast, make chalky look and wear off easily. This product is an in-part mineral sunscreen (the mineral component is way more than chemical) – clever!
It has a heavenly whipped cream texture. It glides on smooth like silk and dried immediately. I can’t tell that this product is SPF 30, it’s so light! I really enjoy using this product. There’s no grease and no tacky or sticky film left on my skin. It has a pleasant light floral scent. The product itself has a very sheer pink color. The silicone and pink color can blur fine lines and brighten skin really well. It is an excellent lightweight moisturizer with sunscreen that can be used as a sheer primer!
Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ Wetforce For Face Review | Full size $36, Travel size $20 and also available in a set for $32 (a $42 value).
An innovative protective sunscreen for the face that becomes more effective when it comes into contact with water, delivering the best coverage under the sun for healthy-looking, beautiful skin. To activate WetForce technology, expose the applied area to water for 15 minutes or sweat for 30 minutes.
IcanGWP: This is a great rescue sunscreen for swimming days! It is a water resistant (80 minutes) sunscreen with Wetforce technology. It contains a little bit of alcohol and fragrance but it is also a very water-resistant formula, high SPF and contains great antioxidants.
This creamy sunscreen adds a subtle sheen to my skin. Not sticky and can wear well with makeup. When I wash my skin with everyday facial foam it did nothing to this sunscreen. You need a little bit of oil-based makeup remover to clean it. I highly recommend this product for outdoor humid day or swimming. You will feel like it truly protects your skin from the sun. FYI – 16% Zinc Oxide may leave white-ish cast, test it out!
I have tried Anessa which is a sister brand of Shiseido (available in Japan and Amazon here). It is also water resistant but it is a sunscreen milk not cream.

Fresh Sugar Rose Tinted Lip Treatment Sunscreen SPF 15 Review | Full size $24 Available in 14 shades
A bestselling lip treatment—and a cult-favorite among all who try it, including Hollywood’s elite—that moisturizes, protects, and smooths the lips. This product is an Allure Best of Beauty winner. It has a bright, citrus scent and is free of petroleum, mineral oil, and lanolin.
IcanGWP: We need SPF for our lips too. It’s hard finding a lip balm with decent SPF + decent ingredients. When it comes to tinted lip balm/treatment with SPF, there are not many prestige or high-end beauty options. If you have sunburned your lips, it must be really painful. Fresh Lip Treatment is like a cross between a lip balm and lipstick. It glides on smoothly and offers a hint of shine. Not too much color. Great option, get so much love (the average review is 4.5). FYI – They have changed the formula past winter. NARS Pure Sheer SPF Lip Treatment is also a good option with both UVA and UVB protection (in-part mineral). Another option for higher SPF, board spectrum SPF 30 mineral sunscreen, is Sisley Paris ‘Super Stick Solaire’ Sunscreen SPF 30.

A portable, non-chemical sunscreen that helps to protect, moisturize, brighten, and re-invigorate skin for a youthful-looking appearance.
IcanGWP Review: It is a one of a dream lotion with sunscreen for oily, combination and acne prone skin! On a hot summer day, can you imagine layers of toner, serum, moisturizer and sunscreen + makeup? It is quite difficult to find a good lotion with sunscreen that won’t clog pore, and this one do not (for me)! It is not leaving much grease on the skin. Just a sheen of active sun protection ingredients (Titanium Dioxide 3.36%, Zinc Oxide 4.13% – all minerals!). It doesn’t leave any white cast behind. The average review is 4. There is a good list of antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and skin-repairing ingredients. The quality is great and the price is right too.
