Working out tones muscles so your body looks firmer, and many experts believe the same holds true for your face. “Aestheticians at the Darphin Paris Institute teach women to apply their face creams with a deep massaging motion,” Labassee explains. “Think of it as Pilates for your face.” Women in Korea and Japan are also fans of facial massage, she says. The key is to take your time when you put on moisturizer. Start by pressing the heels of your hands along your jawline on both sides of your face, moving up toward the ears. Next, use fingertips to smooth on your cream from the apples of cheeks up and back toward the temples, then from the brows up toward the hairline.

Over time, the “sleep wrinkles” caused by mushing your face against a pillow each night won’t disappear once you’re awake. If you sleep on your stomach, “the compression between the pillow and your skin can cause lines around the eye area that are more distinct than the usual lines caused by aging,” says Dr. Julia Tzu, a dermatologist and clinical assistant professor of dermatology at New York University School of Medicine. And side sleepers “can get prominent lines on the side that rests against the pillow, increasing the number of horizontal neck lines.” If you can’t sleep on your back, consider silk sheets. Pounding the pavement can take a toll on your body, face included. “The constant up-and-down force may loosen facial ligaments and cause sagging and drooping in the cheeks, jaw, and jowls,” says Dr. Julius Few, owner of the Few Institute for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in Chicago and New York City. The ideal solution is to get your cardio fix with a nonimpact activity. “Elliptical devices or exercising in a pool or on a bicycle are good substitutions,” Few says. French Beauty Tips from Allure Magazine
Mathilde Thomas, the cofounder of Caudalie, is set to give away her tribe’s secrets with the release of her new book, The French Beauty Solution. Of course, the book includes well-known tips, like “a glass of red wine is good for your skin” and “never eat processed food,” but there are a few gems we hadn’t heard a million times.
Mix some self-tanner in with your moisturizer to cover dark spots. “It is very difficult to maintain a milky-white complexion, as it shows every little spot and blotch. One piece of advice we probably won’t try: Thomas’s three-day grape cleanse. It’s just what it sounds like—you eat grapes, and only grapes, for three days straight. That may be a little bit too French, even for us.

French Beauty Tips from ELLE Magazine
As the cofounder (with her husband, Bertrand) of luxe skin-care line Caudalie, Mathilde Thomas has perhaps the most beautiful inspiration board on earth. Mireille Guiliano [the author of French Women Don’t Get Fat] has a new book called French Women Don’t Get Facelifts. That’s not true. They just do things more subtly.
What’s your daily routine?
I use tips from my spas. They blend one pump of the Caudalie Instant Foaming Cleanser with two pumps of the Gentle Cleansing Milk, because it gives a texture that is foamy but also extremely creamy. I do that at night. In the morning, I just put foaming cleanser on a Clarisonic brush. Afterward, I spray on my Beauty Elixir, then apply serum, eye cream, and moisturizer.

Do you do any special at-home treatments?
For my hair, I use a mixture of egg yolk, rum, and olive oil. It’s a grandma recipe, very French. You put that awful mixture on your head for an hour and then shampoo. It makes your hair very shiny, with a lot of body. I do it when I’m on holiday. For the face, it’s nice to do a mask with honey and lemon juice. You put it on for 10 minutes to brighten and soften the skin.

You travel a lot. How do you arrive refreshed?
A friend of mine who used to work for Sisley told me that if you put moisturizer on your whole body before a flight, you will recover from jet lag faster, because you will hold in moisture on the plane. Then I take my in-flight sleeping mask and slide it on my face so that it bends my lashes upward. It works like an eyelash curler. When I wake up, my eyes look more open.
