Technology is increasingly enabling us to instrument our physical world with complex sensors and actuators – creating a future that encompasses the Internet of Things, smart cities/spaces and pervasive computing research agendas that are at the heart of an increasingly connected world that generates huge volumes of complex data. The emergence of such data-rich environments will require new approaches to all aspects of data science – from the techniques used to capture data through in-situ data analysis and the relationship between physical spaces and the cloud to interaction and presentation of data visualisations in physical environments. This is an exciting new area for data science and one that Lancaster is working to establish an international reputation in - building on its world-class pervasive computing heritage and new multidisciplinary Data Science Institute.
We are seeking an outstanding computer scientist who can help lead Lancaster’s efforts to establish the new field of pervasive data science. You should have a proven track-record in a relevant area of pervasive computing and/or data science and a desire to take a leading role in work at the intersection of these fields. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience of developing, deploying and trialling systems involving pervasive data science.

Data Science is a key area of growth for Lancaster University and is founded on historic strengths in Computer Science, Statistics and Operational Research coupled with an outstanding track-record in multidisciplinary research. The post forms part of a strategic investment that has seen the University approve over 15 new data science related academic positions in the last 12 months. Together with over 70 academics with existing expertise at Lancaster, these positions are a key part of the new world-class, multidisciplinary Data Science Institute that is starting to set the global standard for an interdisciplinary approach to contemporary data-driven research challenges.
The successful candidate will be a strong and collegiate individual who is keen to bring their outstanding competences in pervasive computing and data science to play a key role in shaping this exciting new initiative bridging pervasive computing in the School of Computing and Communications and the Data Science Institute.
