Wellington Fire District’s Fire Station Flooring Challenge
With a history dating back to 1905, the Wellington Fire Protection District proudly serves over 3000 residents living throughout an area of 288 square miles in Northern Colorado. The members respond to over 500 calls per year, ranging in nature from medical emergencies to hazardous material incidents. The district recently completed construction of a brand new fire station that required a high-performance concrete floor coating system designed to meet the specific requirements of the facility. Prerequisites of the surface included the ability to resist not only oil and grease, but also a number of harsh chemicals used for equipment maintenance. In addition, the coating had to exhibit strong abrasion and impact resistance qualities that are necessary for heavy-traffic environments. The installation contractor, Mile High Coatings of Fort Collins, CO, consulted with the customer to select SPARTACOTE FLEX™ SB Chip high performance polyaspartic concrete coating system. To ease vehicle parking and organization, twelve 40’ long Safety Yellow stripes were integrated into the floor coating system.

SPARTACOTE Concrete Coating System Installation Specifics:
Initially, the existing concrete floor was ground to remove any weak latent material and to properly open the concrete for optimal coating adhesion. With the floor properly prepped, the contractor installed a light-grey SPARTACOTE Flex® SB polyaspartic prime coat. The floor was then taped off and safety yellow stripes were applied using SPARTACOTE Flex® SB Safety Yellow polyaspartic concrete coating. With the base coats completed, the area was again taped off for the vinyl chip broadcast portion of the installation. The last stage of the application included a high gloss top-coat with SPARTACOTE Flex® SB clear polyaspartic, providing the final system superior hot-tire, chemical and abrasion resistance.
SPARTACOTE Concrete Coatings offer fast return to service
Given the rapid cure nature of the materials, the concrete coating was completed in a relatively short amount of time, with next-day return to service. The Wellington Fire Protection district was very pleased with how the project turned out and is looking forward to benefitting through reduced maintenance, long-term durability and a continued sense of pride in their new facility.
