Loneliness is one of the somewhat appauling trappings on the modern age in the West.

With so much to connect us digitally, never have we felt more isolated, particularly as we get older.  However, Tracey Woodward, CEO of Aromatherapy Associates has a rather charming solution.

Loneliness is more dangerous than smoking

We have, naturally, always been believers in the wide-reaching power and depth of the spa experience.  But Tracey’s hypothesis is that loneliness is a comparable risk factor for early death to smoking 15 cigarettes a day.  She believes that the spa industry has the power to change that, in an increasingly technologically-dependent and stressed world.

More nurturing, less anti-ageing

She aired her thoughts at Spatec Europe last month.  She spoke about her belief that the spa industry is becoming, and will continue to become, increasingly important for healthy living in the modern age.  However, she thinks that the emphasis for the industry needs to shift away from cosmetics, anti-ageing and the like and more towards products, treatments and practices that nurture both internal and external wellbeing.

Treatments are a way of making a connection

She predicted that the spa industry will take on the mantle of delivering products that nurture and improve the way we feel, rather than just the way we look.  She linked her thoughts to her time at M&S where she successfully grew the beauty department.  She said that part of that success was due to the fact that lonely women would come to the store for a consultation in order to speak with someone and make a connection.

Massage is the social event of the future

In the same way, she foresees that beauty treatments and massage are an opportunity for people to get out of the house and make a connection with someone.  They are also a tangible solution to that other modern issue, stress, which is enhanced by a lack of engagement.

Concluding that spas have the power to improve emotional intelligence, she said that massage has been proven to help reduce depression and increase serotonin.  She also predicted that “massage will be a social event in the future.”

Overall, Tracey spoke about something very true to our hearts at Spabreaks.com, the power of touch. It’s about showing a little kindness to help loneliness, to support someone going through physical illness, or simply to make someone smile.
