Message From The President
December is upon us and we are fast approaching the midpoint of the hockey season already. The upcoming holiday season reminds us to take time with our families and friends, no matter how you celebrate. Whether you are shopping for a new stick or a special jersey for the hockey fanatic in your house, playing shinny on a frozen pond at the cottage with your loved ones, attending a party with your teammates or preparing your backyard ice rink, we’d like you to remember to celebrate the great connections you’ve made through your hockey community. Each one of us is lucky to live in a peaceful and prosperous country where we are free to enjoy our national pastime and can delight in the joy our children get from playing hockey with their friends. On behalf of all of us at the MHL, I’d like to wish you all the best of the holiday season and a very Happy New Year.

Christmas Break
There will be no league games scheduled between
Saturday, December 24th and Sunday, January 1, 2017 (inclusive).

House League Convening
The MHL’s convening period ended on November 6th for the House League. Convening is a product of the MHL and the Area Associations managing teams and players in order to find the best fit. This is based upon games played to that point, and done so that all participants can play the game competitively. Now that all teams have been placed, the MHL Scheduler will commence working on a game schedule that will show 6 weeks’ worth of games at a time. Thank you to all Area Association and MHL convenors, who spent hours watching games in order to find the best fit for all of our MHL players.
MHL Challenge Tournament
April 6-9, 2017
The MHL is pleased to be holding the 15th edition of their year-end tournament. Divisions offered for Minor Novice and Novice Select/Red, Minor Atom and Atom Select/Red and Minor Peewee and Peewee Select/Red. All games take place at the Hershey Centre in central Mississauga.

Boston Pizza MHL President’sTrophy Update
For the past 13 seasons, the Mississauga Hockey League has awarded the President’s Trophy to the top “A” team within the League. That is, the “A” team that has collected the highest percentage of available points to the end of the Regular Season.
The standings for 2016-2017 are shown below. Through November 17th, we have two teams with (still) perfect records and two teams not far behind. Good luck to everyone!

Hockey Canada “Slew Footing” Rule
Effective for the 2016-2017 season, Hockey Canada has implemented a new rule related to “Slew Footing”.
Definition:
“The action of tripping a player by knocking the player’s skates out from behind with a kicking OR leg dragging motion”
Once the Referee has witnessed the act of “Slew Footing”, he/she has only two options to make his/her call:
Option 1:
A player who slew foots an opponent shall be assessed a Double Minor penalty and Game Misconduct if the infraction is committed while the offending player is stationary (not skating).
Option 2:
A player who slew foots an opponent shall be assessed a Match penalty if the infraction is committed while the offending player is in motion (skating).
As before, a Match penalty shall be assessed to any player who accidentally injures, attempts to injure or deliberately injures an opponent by slew footing (while stationary or in motion).

Ron Ellis is pictured with an Applewood Hockey Association player at Maple Leaf Gardens in the 1960’s. Ron Ellis played for the Toronto Maple Leafs for 16 seasons, winning the Stanley Cup in 1967. He was a member of Team Canada at the 1972 Summit series. Ellis has worked at the Hockey Hall of Fame since 1992.
Bench Passes
A reminder to all team officials (bench staff) that as of the end of convening (November 7th), Referees will be checking for MHL-issued, 2016-17 bench passes at every game. Please ensure that you have your bench pass with you. If you cannot show a valid pass, you will be asked to leave the bench. In order to receive a bench pass, team officials must have the proper level of coaching or trainers course certification, Respect in Sport for coaches/activity leaders and a current police record check.

First Shift Program
First Shift returns for two Winter Sessions!
The Mississauga Hockey League partnered with Bauer and Hockey Canada and offered this program in 2014-2015 and 2015-2016. We’re pleased to be partnering with them again on this program for 2016-2017. We’re holding 5 sessions for 2016-17, 3 in the Fall (now completed) and 2 in the Winter.
The two Winter sessions (after Christmas) will run from:
Welcome Events (Equipment Fitting and Explaination of Program):
Sunday January 8, 2017, Session 1 2:00 to 4:30 PM, Session 2 5:00 to 7:30 PM
On Ice Dates: Sunday January 22, 2017 and continue for 6 weeks until Sunday February 26, 2017 inclusive.
Time: Session 1 4:15 to 5:15, Session 2 5:15 to 6:15
Cost for the program is $199 and includes a full set of equipment (from Bauer), and six weeks of on-ice training (from the Mississauga Hockey League).
The Welcome Event (as referenced above) is when your child will be fitted for, and receive his or her equipment. It’s also an opportunity to meet some folks from Hockey Canada, Bauer, and the Mississauga Hockey League, who will be putting on the on-ice sessions for your players.
So, if you have a child (or know a child), aged 6-10, who might be interested in giving hockey a try, has never played organized hockey before, and you’re a Mississauga resident, please send an email to jleavens@hockey.on.ca. The email should include the player’s name and date of birth, confirmation that you’ve reviewed the above, and an indication which of the 3 programs you’d like to sign-up for.
MHL Associations support the Mississauga Steelheads
Once again this season, the six associations that make up the Mississauga Hockey League will support the local Ontario Hockey League team by holding Association Nights. Check with your association for prices and information on ticket sales and let’s fill the Hershey Centre with our players proudly wearing their jerseys!

Lorne Park Clarkson Wild Midget Red win at Detroit
The LPC Wild Midget Red LPC115 team recently won the U17 Select Motown Cup in Detroit, winning 3 round robin games and the final.
Phantom Wolves Atom “A” win at Toronto
The Phantom Wolves Atom A Team was involved in the Toronto Wolverines Fall Classic Tournament. This saw the team win there first game 6-0 over the Toronto Eagles on Friday November 18. Their second game was against the West Hill Golden Hawks the same day where once again the team was successful with a 6-1victory. The following day on the Saturday saw the team play their only game against the Toronto Wolverines and again prevailed with a 6-2 victory. Then the team came back on a very early Sunday morning to play a great team in the Humber Valley Sharks, and despite a great effort we fell 3-2 in a game that saw the 2 teams go back and forth. This led to the team with a 3-1 record in the round robin qualify for the Championship game against a heavily favoured Nickel City Stars team that went 4-0 in the round robin. The game went back and forth with Nickel City going up 1-0 in the 2nd period and rallied back to tie the game at the mid way of the 3rd. This would lead to a 5 minute overtime period which saw the 2 teams go back and forth once again. Overtime would solve nothing, and the game then was decided by a shoot out. The 3 players for each team went head to head against the goalies where Zavier Ladak would shut the door and after a goal by Matthew Ferriera and Joseph Lee in the shoot out, this would give the Phantom Wolves the victory. The coaches were so proud of the team and want to thank them for a great Tournament.
Port Credit Storm Minor Atom “A” win at Toronto
The Port Credit Minor Atom A Team went a Perfect 5-0 at the Toronto Wolverine Fall Classic Tournament.
The Final Game was a hard fought, exciting battle that was won in a shoot out. GO STORM !!!
Meadowvale Hawks Midget Red win at Vaughan
The Meadowvale Midget Junior Hawks won the Marshall Drewnowsky Memorial Select Tournament this past weekend.
The Hawks went undefeated in the Round Robin finishing first. They beat North Toronto in the semi finals 3-1 creating a rematch against the Vaughan Rangers, who they tied 2-2 in the round robin. In the Finals, the Hawks came from behind to tie the game 1-1. The first overtime, 4 on 4 created many scoring chances, but no goals. In the second overtime, now 3 on 3, the Hawks scored to become champions. Tournament MVP Marc Antoine Dubois, the Hawks goalie, had only 4 goals against in 5 games

Erindale Spitfires Minor Atom “A” win at Markham
The Erindale Spitfires Minor Atom “A” team won Gold at the Markham Islanders Jerry Jacobs Memorial tournament November 4-6 . The Spitfires played solid defensively all weekend allowing just six goals in five games capped off by a 4-1 win over the Duffield Devils in the semi final and a 3-1 win over the host Markham Islanders in the final.
Applewood Coyotes Peewee Red win at Don Mills
The Applewood Coyotes Peewee Red team won the 17th Annual Don Mills Civitan Select Hockey Tournament this past weekend. The team won its first 4 games by a combined score of 28-0, before winning in the finals against the Thornhill Rebels Select team by a score of 4-2.
