The American Degree Program recently organised a Mathematics Workshop in support with the University of Waterloo, Canada. The purpose of organising the workshop was to challenge students to think critically and creatively as they are tasked to solve several engaging mathematical problems presented by visiting Professor Mike Eden, a lecturer in the Facuty of Mathematis and an Associate Director at the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing at the University of Waterloo (UW).
The goal of the workshop was to encourage students to have fun with mathematics and computer science while highlighting its importance in relation to today’s industry demands. Professor Mike Eden’s role as the presenter and facilitator was to guide the students in a group setting through a series of mathematical problems by asking them key questions and guiding them through the applications of common problem-solving approaches.

Twenty-one students attended the Mathematics Workshop where they were presented with thought-provoking mathematical problems that questioned their thinking methods as Professor Mike Eden prodded the students into seeing the key integers that the students could use in solving the equations presented by Professor Eden.
The University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Mathematics has the largest concentration of mathematical and computer science talent in the world. Academically, co-op and regular study are the same as students take their courses together and follow the same academic programme. The only difference is co-op students take a break from ther studies every four months to go on four-month work terms in jobs located primarily in Ontario. During co-op work terms, students undertake a variety of job responsibilities, pick up new work-related skills and can earn competitive salaries, depending on their job level and experience. While co-op takes one year longer to complete than a more traditional program – for a total of 4 years and six months – students gain up to two years of valuable work experience and make can make important career contacts.

Prof Mike Eden is a lecturer in the Faculty of Mathematics and an Associate Director at the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing at the University of Waterloo (UW). He has received degrees in mathematics from UW and York University, as well as a B.Ed from the University of Western Ontario. Prof Mike taught high school mathematics for 15 years before joining the faculty at UW in 2008. In addition to teaching first-year calculus and algebra courses at UW, Prof Mike is actively involved in creating high school mathematics contests as well as conducting outreach to schools like HELP University and heading workshops for students around the world and through publications and contests.
