The remains of a 3,400-year-old Bronze Age Canaanite citadel, has been unearthed in the middle of the Israeli coastal city Nahariya. The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) announced Wednesday that the site will be preserved and incorporated in a mini-museum in the basement of a high-rise apartment building.
IAA director Israel Hasson and Danny Kochav, director of the Kochav Company, Ltd., reached an agreement to have the site incorporated into the apartment high-rise Kochav Company is building on Balfour Street in the coastal city, which lies walking distance away from the beach.

They decided that this would be the best solution for both the public and for conservation, due to the “extraordinary nature and quality” of the site.
The IAA told The Jerusalem Post that more of the citadel’s excavation’s findings will be presented to the public at a joint conference of the Northern Region of the Israel Antiquities Authority and the University of Haifa on Thursday, January 7.

The excavation of the citadel has been a long process completed by the IAA in conjunction with youth groups, in an attempt to involve the younger generations in local heritage. It was also carried out as a part of a project by the Kochav Company (which is building the high rise).

With the help of architect Alex Shpol, planner for the Interior Ministry’s regional committee for planning and construction, a way to preserve part of the citadel in the basement level of the building was drawn up.

Some of the archaeological materials uncovered at the site include: ceramic figurines of humans and animals, bronze weapons, and imported pottery vessels. Analysis of the pottery is providing evidence for the “extensive commercial and cultural relations that existed at that time with Cyprus and the rest of the lands in the Mediterranean basin” Nimrod Getzov, Yair Amitzur and Dr. Ron Be’eri, excavation directors on behalf of the IAA told Israel National News.

“It seems that the citadel which we uncovered was used as an administrative center that served the mariners who sailed along the Mediterranean coast 3,400 years ago,” said Nimrod Getzov, Yair Amitzur and Dr. Ron Be’eri, excavation directors on behalf of the IAA.
Other important discoveries found amongst the ruins are plentiful remains of cereals, legumes and grape seeds “which are indicative of the provisions the sailors would purchase” according to the IAA archaeologists. This is consistent with their belief that the site was used as an administrative center that served Mediterranean mariners.

The IAA also believes that there was once a dock alongside the citadel.
“There was probably a dock alongside the citadel. Numerous artifacts were discovered in its rooms, including ceramic figurines in form of humans and animals, bronze weapons and imported pottery vessels that attest to the extensive commercial and cultural relations that existed at that time with Cyprus and the rest of the lands in the Mediterranean basin.”
The story of the Canaanites still has many gaps. It is known that Canaan was the name of a large and prosperous country which compromises present-day Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Israel. Canaan was sometimes a tributary nation to Egypt and at other times it was independent. The details of the Canaanite ruling system have remained elusive.
The Canaanites were a “sophisticated agricultural and urban people.” The name Canaan means “Land of Purple” (a purple dye was extracted from a murex shellfish found near the shores of Palestine).

The Canaanite alphabet
Historians believe that the Canaanites,invented the form of writing that became the alphabet, which, through the Greeks and Romans, was passed on to many cultures influenced by their successors–namely, the nations and people’s of Western civilization.
As Haaretz reports, it also remains unknown why “there have been no significant findings of alphabetic writing from the region during the Middle Bronze Age, though neighboring Egypt and Mesopotamia had advanced civilizations with highly advanced writing systems.”
The Destruction of Canaan Remains a Focal Point Today
Israel News indicated that archaeologists lack “details on what caused the series of destruction in Canaanite cities and the lack of development in the Canaanite culture around 1250-1200 BC also has evaded researchers. There is some indication however, that a catastrophic event, or series of events, may have been part of the problem.”
Archaeologists however were able to find proof that the fortress was burned down at least four times, and rebuilt each time.
The book of Joshua and other biblical passages detail the events of this destruction. It was God himself who ordered the complete destruction of all the people, including women, children, and animals, who occupied Canaan.
This story is one of the most cited by scoffers and unbelievers who claim it reveals the true “genocidal” nature of God. This story and many others, misquoted might I add, was the basis of the NY Times best-selling book, “The God Delusion,” written by Richard Dawkins. Dawkins, a highly vocal opponent of God and professing atheist, reflects on the Canaanite destruction, and his disdain for Christianity in particular, referring to God as a “racist, infanticidal, genocidal, capriciously malevolent bully” on page 31, of The God Delusion.
In transgressing and lying against the LORD, and departing away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood – Isaiah 59:13 (KJV).
To date, the Canaanite story is one of the most referenced by the religious intolerant and scoffers, who often make comparisons between our God of the Bible with Hitler. They claim that there is no difference between God ordering the Israelites to kill millions of people, versus Hitler ordering the killing of millions of Jews in Nazi Germany. Naysayers and critics who tell this story fail to point out key details of the Bible, and one very important difference. GOD did not order a specific TRIBE to be killed. Many tribes inhabited the area, he ordered the destruction of all of them. Cherry-picking Bible verses is not new nor foreign to Christians. This practice will only continue to worsen in the days to come.
When we carefully examine all the Biblical facts regarding the Canaanites, and accept that God is a righteous judge, it is not hard to understand the reason for their destruction. We should be reminded that God does not act impulsively. The destruction to the Canaanites came after 400 years of waiting for them to repent.
The HYPOCRISY of MAN
If we take a look at our current society today, we see things like prisons, police, and juvenile facilities. Do parents punish children? Do judges punish criminals? Do police officers put offenders in jail? Most states have a death penalty in place for certain crimes, too. All of these are indeed “punishment” systems.
I ask you, if MAN is worthy of delivering PUNISHMENT, why is it that we fail to realize that GOD, who is our Creator, should be EXEMPTED from delivering punishment? That is both a fallacy and the epitome of hypocrisy to think that MAN can get away with sin. The fact that there is punishment for SIN, is something that revolts and angers anti-God people to their core!
Moreover, supporters of abortion, legal euthanasia, and war, all of these equate to murder, and they are justified by standards according to MAN. There is nothing FAIR about aborting a child, nor is their anything just in euthanasia. Yet our legal system, and the same people calling God a genocidal maniac endorse this! Most who are honest can agree, that these acts are committed for selfish, money motivated reasons, and genocide. WHEREAS, GOD delivers righteous JUDGMENT, and he has no motive for money or genocide. It GRIEVES and angers God that HIS creation has rebelled against him.
Man would like for us to think that there is no consequence for the “do as thou wilt” mentality. But, unlike what satan says to his believers, “thou shall not die,” THOU SHALT SURELY DIE IN SIN, if you do not repent! I am sorry if that is harsh. But the truth is, there is a GOD, the creator of this world, and he does execute judgment.
To insinuate that God cannot execute judgment is both nonsense and arrogance!
Some have cried out, but WHY did he punish the children of Canaan? I too wondered why God did not spare innocent children. Especially since the bible clearly teaches that children are not able to determine right or wrong, and all who die, automatically enter into Heaven. Trusting and relying on God’s Word, I found my answers.
Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it. -Deuteronomy 1:39 (KJV).
The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin. -Deuteronomy 24:16 (KJV).
The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.- Ezekiel 18:20 (KJV).
And then I read this gem:
And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness. – Numbers 14:33 (KJV).
And this GEM!
And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. – Matthew 10:28 (KJV).
God did not destroy the souls of these children, quite the opposite, God delivered their souls from a life of hell on earth, to a life of eternal bliss with him! The children of Canaan were spared from a life of suffering, and without a doubt, from following in their parents sinful lifestyles! I have a strong inclination, that if God would have spared the children, the next accusation would have been: WHY DID GOD LEAVE ORPHANED CHILDREN? I truly know in all of the verses and study, that GOD did exactly what he knew was best. He brought the children home, where they are now living in peace, love and joy!
The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come. – Isaiah 57:1 (KJV).
When we begin to seek the deeper things of GOD, and understand HIS righteous love, and accept that there are consequences for sin, the destruction of the Canaanites does not cause a stumbling block. The key is having faith and believing in GOD. That faith has never failed me.
23 Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: he will not afflict. 24 Men do therefore fear him: he respecteth not any that are wise of heart.-Job 37:23-24 (KJV).
God Orders the Destruction of the Land of Canaan
The Canaanites occupied what would become the promise land for 400 years, until God ordered their destruction during the period of the Judges. It is here, that historical links pivot us toward the wrath of God, and the provocation of his anger.
God commanded the Israelites to “destroy all the inhabitants of the land” of Canaan (Joshua 9:24). God ordered them to conquer, kill, and cast out the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. Joshua tells us that after crossing the Jordan River, the Israelites “utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, ox and sheep and donkey, with the edge of the sword, burning the city and all of its inhabitants, killing 12,000, hanging their king. Makkedah, Libnah, and Lachish met the same fate. “Nothing that breathed should remain alive.” All commanded by God.
16 But of the cities of these people, which the Lord thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth: 17 But thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the Lordthy God hath commanded thee:18 That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so should ye sin against the Lord your God. – Deuteronomy 20:16-18 (KJV). 21 And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword. -Joshua 6:21(KJV).
24 And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein: only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the Lord. -Joshua 6:24 (KJV).

The Israelites failed in this mission as well, and exactly what God said would happen occurred. We now see the fruit of that disobedience in the world today, persisting in false religions around the globe:
And an angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.2 And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this? 3 Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you. –Judges 2:1-3 (KJV).
Why did God Order the Destruction of Canaan?
In order for Israel to establish a Holy Land that served and worshipped GOD, all remnants of the pagan cults had to be removed. At this point, the Canaanites refused to repent, and their corruption was influencing the people. Before the Israelites entered the promised Land God told them:
30 Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise. 31 Thou shalt not do so unto the Lord thy God: for every abomination to theLord, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods. – Deuteronomy 12:30-31 (KJV).
9 When thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee.13 Thou shalt be perfect with the Lord thy God.14 For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the Lord thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.-Deuteronomy 18:9-14 (KJV).
To the dismay of God, Israel disobeyed God and failed to kill all of the people as they were commanded. It was this very disobedience that resulted in Israel’s captivity and eventually led to the nation’s deminse in the times of the Judges.That disobedience and the paganish religions continues today.
The wickedness in the land of Canaan is a story worth every ounce of the caution and fright it delivers. Regardless of human opinion, the GOD we serve is just and righteous. All throughout scripture, we see a recurring theme, the very sin that resulted in the destruction of Canaan and Israel’s exile, is the exact grave sin that plagues and perils the world today, IDOLATRY and false religions. It should be known, they knew of GOD, remember the spies sent to check the promise land? the story of Rahab? (Joshua 2:11). Paul also spoke of these people in Romans 1:21-25.
I will never make excuses, or attempt to cover up God’s wrath, I am not apologetic for the actions of God, I fear him. It really bothers me to see Christians try to hide or shamefully explain this away! I do not question GOD, I know and trust him with all my heart. It is this reverence of GOD, who is more just, more righteous, than any man could ever possibly imagine, that would be wise for all to understand.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. – Proverbs 9:10 (KJV).
IN HIS VERY WORDS, God was patient with the wicked practices of the people of Canaan. Just as God was patient then, he is patient with the wickedness in the world today. However, those who do not believe that SINS reap punishments are in for a surprise. There will be a time when GOD says ENOUGH, JUDGMENT IS COMING! But, man should know, more than anything, GOD is not wanting any TO PERISH, and wishes all men to come to repentance:
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. – 2 Peter 3:9 (KJV).
Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel? – Ezekiel 33:11 (KJV).
For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.- Lamentations 3:33 (KJV).
God waited FOUR HUNDRED YEARS before brandishing punishment on this wicked nation. During the time of Abraham, the land of Canaan continued on its destructive path of sin. God spoke with Abraham, telling him:
But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full. – Genesis 15:16 (KJV).
Note: The Amorites were a powerful tribe that resided in the land of Canaan.
God knew that they would not come to him, but he waited. While he waited, they chose to follow after satan.
It was during the days of Joshua, that the Canaanites’ iniquity became full, and God, becoming full of their iniquity, ordered the army of Israel to destroy them.
It was the Canaanites REBELLION and THEIR failure to heed God’s warning that resulted in their destruction. And then, GOD commanded not only a complete annihilation of the land, but for all the inhabitants of Canaan to be destroyed, specifically calling for the entire land to be burned by FIRE.
God provided us with a multitude of explanations of why the land of Canaan was to be destroyed, We find one revealing answer in Leviticus:
23 Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion. 24 Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you: 25 And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants.26 Ye shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations; neither any of your own nation, nor any stranger that sojourneth among you: 27 (For all these abominations have the men of the land done, which were before you, and the land is defiled;) 28 That the land spue not you out also, when ye defile it, as it spued out the nations that were before you. – Leviticus 18:23-28 (KJV).
The Canaanites were practicing bestiality, homosexuality, sacrificing children, worshipping Idols and false gods, bringing prostitutes in sacred synagogues, having orgies, they practiced sorcery, witchcraft, conjured the dead, consorted with evil spirits, practiced magic spells, practically every evil wicked thing you can think of, was happening in the land of Canaan!
The Canaanites not only adopted a pantheon/polytheistic religious system, but spread of their pagan cult infiltrated Greece, Egypt and other neighboring regions. All of which can be traced back to Nimrod and Babylonia. They worshipped gods and goddesses, and deities such as Baal and El, Asherah and Astarte. Kings also played an important religious role in ceremonies and festivals, and some were revered as gods.
Their sinful, idolatrous, sexual cults, and practices, abhorred by God, are mentioned throughout the Bible.
The bible teaches us, as well as many historical accounts, that Israelites were deceived and allured to practice the customs of the Canaanite religion. The most provocative enticement probably being the weakening of the flesh, sexual attractions and sexual practices no doubt snared many to this pagan cult. As the Canaanites and the Israelites began to live in close proximity of one another, Israeli’s began adopting some of the practices of the Canaanite religion.
3 But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, yea, and made his son to pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the heathen, whom the Lordcast out from before the children of Israel. 4 And he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree. – 2 Kings 16:3-4 (KJV).
5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. – 1 Kings 11:5 (KJV).
And there were also sodomites in the land: and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the Lord cast out before the children of Israel.- 1 Kings 4:24 (KJV).
Israeli children were even named after their gods and goddesses, Baalim; one of the judges, Gideon, was also known by the name Jerubbaal (“Let Baal Contend”).
“There is evidence that Canaanite religion was based on agriculture and had pronounced fertility motifs. The most important gods of the Canaanites were called Baalim (Lords) and their consorts were Baalot (Ladies), or Asherah (singular), usually known by the personal plural name Ashtoret. Women were also thought to have had a relatively advanced status, and they served as priestesses, owned land, entered into contracts, and could initiate divorce,”
“At the center of Canaanite religion was royal concern for religious and political legitimacy and the imposition of a divinely ordained legal structure, as well as peasant emphasis on fertility of the crops, flocks, and humans.” Israel National News reports.
The god of the city of Shechem, which city the Israelites had absorbed peacefully under Joshua, was called Baal-berith (Lord of the Covenant) or El-berith (God of the Covenant). Shechem became the first cultic center of the religious tribal confederacy (called an amphictyony by the Greeks) of the Israelites during the period of the judges.
When Shechem was excavated in the early 1960s, the temple of Baal-berith was partially reconstructed; the sacred ‘pillar’ which was a phallic symbol a representation of the ashera, (the female fertility symbol) was placed in its original position before the entrance of the temple.

This story should serve to remind us of how the earth and all of its inhabitants will meet a similar fate if repentance is not sought. When people do not FEAR GOD, and willfully reject him, therein comes the ability and the arrogant nerve to be prideful and boastful. The greatest lie satan ever told mankind was thinking they could escape the punishment of sin and death! The naysayers in their limited wisdom and foolishness, fail to realize, that the GOD they dare question, is their creator.
The land of Canaan is a story that mirrors the world today, and the exact reasons God flooded the earth in the days of Noah. Canaanite religions adopted their practices from Babylonia, and the influences are seen in every pagan religious cult we see in the world today! While all these cults operate under many different names, the practices are all the same, and all will meet the same frightful end.
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. – 2 Peter 3:10 (KJV).
But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. – 2 Peter 3:7 (KJV).
Revelation gives the strongest of warnings, and soon all of these warnings, will deliver the wrath that prophecy repeatedly warns us about:
And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. – Revelation 18:4 (KJV).
8 Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her. 9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning,10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come. – Revelation 18:8-10 (KJV).
Just as God delivered warnings then, he has issued them now. It is up to man to decide whether to heed to them or not.
And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. – Matthew 24:4
Therefore hearken not unto the words of the prophets that speak unto you, saying, Ye shall not serve the king of Babylon: for they prophesy a lie unto you. – Jeremiah 27:14 (KJV).
If you are not serving JESUS, you are serving the false gods of Babylonia. Even if you claim that you reject that God exists, that is still a cult of evil beliefs, when the veneer is stripped away, the author, SATAN is revealed!
The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good. – Psalm 53:1 (KJV).
The bible also warns that many will be deceived by false prophets and doctrines of devils. The greater significance of all these religions that share and mirror very similar practices is the convergence to an ultimate one world religion, that will appear for the cause of peace. This global religion masquerading as the one true religion, will in fact be the religion of the Antichrist. In order for this to happen, there must be a continuity and a merging of all religions. That is why we see these similarities, they are not a coincidence. Many promote their sameness and oneness already. You will hear things like, “all paths lead to God, Allah is the same as God, all of which are false and meant to lead the followers away from the true gospel of JESUS. This movement will also be the one that unifies and leads the “church” to worship the Antichrist.
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me – John 14:6 (KJV).
If you do not know JESUS as your personal savior, I urge you today, to seek truth. Rather than listening to tales of man, and what they tell you, why not read the WORD OF GOD and FIND truth for yourself!?
