MUSICAL GUEST:  Yngwie Malmsteen

Yngwie became the only guest musician to perform in two episodes in one season.  The guys discussed Yngwie’s book, Relentless.  The book features a story about how he came to join Alcatrazz, and discusses the numerous releases that he has been a part of that people may not even know about.  In the book, Yngwie talks about how his style evolved.  Many people think that his neo-classical style was inspired by Ritchie Blackmore, but it was actually inspired by the playing of Genesis keyboardist, Tony Banks.

His wife/manager put together the idea for the tour that Yngwie will be doing this summer called “Guitar Gods.”  Some of the guitarists joining him will be Uli Jon Roth, Bumblefoot and Gary Hoey.

GUEST:  Joe Satriani

Satriani and Yngwie go back a long way.  He was introduced to Yngwie’s music by Kirk Hammet.  When he first listened to it, he was convinced that somebody sped up the tape.  He was giving guitar lessons at the time, and admitted that even he couldn’t play Yngwie’s style.  Eddie mentioned that Satriani and Yngwie are two of the most successful artists that have thrived doing mainly instrumental music.

Jim asked if the transition into a full band like Chickenfoot was difficult.  Satriani said that they just focused on highlighting the best of what each member brought to the table.

Satriani discussed his book, Strange Beautiful Music, his latest album – Unstoppable Momentum and his incredibly innovative Chrome Dome box set, which features a chrome statue of his head wearing sunglasses.  The removable sunglasses contain two USB drives that hold his entire studio catalog (available on www.Satriani.com).

One of the things that he loved about the book is hearing the stories about himself and his various projects from a different angle because it was through the prism of other peoples’ perspectives.

Right after his album Surfing With The Alien came out, Satriani was struggling with figuring out how to be a solo instrumental artist.  His big break came when he received a call to audition to open for Mick Jagger on a solo show at The Bottom Line in New York City.  He ended up touring with him for several months, and learned what it meant to be a rock star.

While there is nothing planned as of this moment, the hope is that Chickenfoot will record another album when everyone’s schedules align.

He will be going back out on tour overseas this summer in support of Unstoppable Momentum, but before he leaves, he’s going to be playing in Westbury on Long Island (back where it all started).

GUESTS:  Comedians Artie Lange and Jim Breuer

This was the first time on the show for the comedians, who are both huge fans of the show.

Artie Lange said that it is his favorite show on television.  A favorite quote about the show of Jim’s was when Lange said…“I’ve never seen a show where you treat the former drummer of the Scorpions (Herman Rarebell) like he was Tom Cruise on The Tonight Show.”

Lange, who has battled drug addiction for many years, loved watching the show during his last stint in rehab.  According to Lange…“Nothing is better for heroin withdrawals than this show.”

He talked about his first concert being the AC/DC Back In Black tour at the age of 14.  His friend’s older brother gave him what he thought was Coca Cola, but it turned out to be Jack Daniels and Coke.  He also talked about how times were different back in the day and told a story about when he was at a Yankee game with his father as a kid in the late 1970’s; his father’s friend asked him to hold his beer while he rolled a joint.

Lange has a nightly show on DirecTV called The Artie Lange Show.  His second book, Crash and Burn, is coming out on paperback in June.  He is also going to be filming a Comedy Central special in Newark, NJ.

Jim Breuer often watches the show while traveling on planes.  He talked about how he is very loud while wearing headphones and agreeing with things that are said on the show, usually while the person next to him is watching cooking shows or something else much tamer than That Metal Show.

Breuer’s first metal concert was Iron Maiden and Judas Priest at the Nassau Coliseum.  He talked about how people threw lit M-80’s at the show.  He was also at the show that got Priest banned from Madison Square Garden after the fans ripped out the seats and threw them around like Frisbees.

Breuer is in the process of recording a metal album as a singer.  It is being produced by Volbeat’s Rob Caggiano.  He jammed with Brian Johnson during the recording session, the same night that Johnson played with Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden.

His upcoming plans include:  Rock On The Range and a Motorhead Cruise.  His comedy special – And Laughter For All –  is available for download on Netflix, and he has a new album coming out in the fall on Metal Blade Records.  Breuer will be doing both a comedy and a metal set at Rock On the Range.

At the end of the interview, before “Stump The Trunk,” Eddie revealed that Breuer was actually the one who came up with the concept for the segment when they did it on Breuer’s radio show.
