Board Of Cosmetology License Requirements In Tennessee

Common requirements:

Must be at least 16 years old

Must have graduated from a state-licensed cosmetology program

Must have passed the state licensing exam

You must also have completed required hours in an approved cosmetology school curriculum. Also you must pass state board examinations and pay fees.

Tennessee Training Hours Requirements In Accredited Cosmetology Schools

Specific requirements:

Cosmetologist license: 1500 Beauty School Hours

Natural Hair Stylist license: 300 Barber School Training Hours

Barber license: 340 Barber School Training Hours

Master Barber license: 1500 Barber School Training Hours

Esthetician license: 750 Esthetics School Hours
Nail Technician license: 600 Nail School Hours

Electrologist license: 600 Electrolysis Training Hours

Cosmetology Instructor license: Cosmetology license with 300 Hours experience and 1 year junior instruction

Barber Instructor license: Barber license with 3 year experience and 450 hours instruction
Massage Therapist license: 500 Massage Therapist School Training Hours

Shampoo Technician: 300 Beauty School Hours

Tennessee(TN) State Board Of Cosmetology License Renewal Process

Cosmetology licenses in Tennessee are due for renewal every two years. Tennessee only requires 16 hours of continued education (CE) for instructors, all other licensees are not required to complete continuing education units per renewal period.

Board Of Cosmetology Reciprocity/Transfer Steps In Tennessee

No reciprocity for manicurists in Tennessee. If you are an esthetician applicant then you must show proof of passed board exams as well as esthetics school training. Or provide proof of five years of work experience. Cosmetology applicants must hold a current license, have completed beauty school training and have passed the board exams or have five years of work experience.

If you cannot meet those requirements, you must submit your application for reciprocity to the board office for individual consideration. You may be required to take additional training hours to meet the minimum requirements.
