Pollensa (or Pollenca) is a tiny town located in the centre of the island of Mallorca, Spain. It’s the quintessential Spanish experience – narrow lanes, houses crammed into streets, tapas restaurants surrounding the town square, etc. And compared to the rest of Mallorca – where the scene ranges from wild nightlife to lazy resorts – Pollensa comes across as much more authentic. It’s not all that far from the Puerto de Pollensa area, and you’ll find yourself at the foothill of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains.
There isn’t a great deal to do around town except relax and take in the Spanish atmosphere. There are regular markets throughout town and also in Puerto de Pollensa, where you’ll find a great variety of traditional foods like jamon serrano (ham). In the middle of town, you can climb the 400+ steps to the Calvari Chapel and take in the lovely views overlooking the village. There’s also Puig de Maria Monastery, where you can rent a room if you want some true peace and quiet, keeping a watchful eye over the area from atop the hill overlooking Pollensa. There’s an excellent hiking trail up here, albeit a challenging one. The views over the Mediterranean are worth it.

Pollensa is definitely the place you come to when you want to slow down and enjoy Mallorca’s quieter side. There’s enough to see and do within town, but you won’t find any big parties here. The locals are friendly, and things are surprisingly cheap! You should only have to pay 5EUR per tapas dish – any more and you’re being ripped off.
Getting to Pollensa
Most people fly into Palma. From here it’s possible to take a bus to the main bus terminal in downtown Palma to meet a connection towards Puerto de Pollensa. The bus system is very regular, even in the off-season; however, it also can be quite slow.
Your best option is to book a rental car. Pollensa is a fair distance from the major tourist attractions, and if you want to grab any beach time or hiking, you’ll appreciate the convenience of a rental.
