Terrorism in the Headlines Means Business for Professional Security Service Providers

It’s a grim truth that the security industry plays on fears. These fears are often justified, and poorly planned security at large events can result in injuries that the venue may be liable for. Ineffective or absent retail security can, in some markets, cost the store thousands in shoplifting. Nevertheless, the sales of professional security service spike in the wake of a terrorist attack or crime. As we reflect upon the attacks on the French Capital, it’s a good time to ponder whether knee-jerk reactions are effective.

Admitting our Biases

Nearly 40% of our business security services come after attacks have already occurred, either to the business itself, or to a business in the same industry. We’re into providing security guards, regardless of the situation. But with that in mind, is the spike in security orders after criminal attacks rational? Is it an appropriate response? We’re going to try our best to look at this issue with unbiased eyes, and draw a conclusion rooted in evidence.

The Threat of Terrorism

The headlines are filled with terrorism lately… so it’s important to recognize that what you see on the news is the exact opposite of what is likely to happen. If terrorism happened all the time, then relatively minor attacks wouldn’t dominate news cycles for weeks. Drunk drivers, bathtub falls, police involved shootings, and even being struck by lightning are all more likely ways to die than terrorist attacks or mass shooting. This statistic doesn’t change in the wake of an attack.

For 99.9% of locations the threat is so devastatingly low that hiring security guards in order to spot and prevent terrorism is a waste of money. (Though, there are plenty of other reasons to hire private security. Wink Wink.) Obviously, major venues or cultural landmarks are exceptions, not necessarily because it’s more likely, so much as because the risk to human life and national morale is significant enough for insurance in the form of security professionals to be worth it. Nevertheless, in the wake of recent attacks there are reasons to hire security professionals.

When it’s Worth It

The phrase “Security Theater” gets bandied about pejoratively every so often. It refers to security measures that are simply meant to put on a show of security without actually providing any necessary services. But…that sense of security matters to businesses. While in other contexts, the presence of bolstered security may seem aggressive or indicative of a lack of trust by a business towards its clients, in the wake of a terror attack, even one in another country, security guards on premise create feelings of comfort and security, and that, in turn, spurs spending and can attract customers who might otherwise stay away.
