Finest Playa Mujeres welcomes groups in Cancun, Mexico.

A perfectly skewered, bone-in Jamon Iberico rests on the sideboard at Tinto & Tapas, an authentic Spanish tapas bar.

Tinto & Tapas is one of the international dining options at Finest Playa Mujeres. The Finest is a gated, luxury all-inclusive resort located 25 minutes north of Cancun, Mexico.

The Mujeres peninsula is tucked between a wildlife preserve and the vivid blue of the Caribbean Sea. Built along the white powder sands and turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the resort welcomes and accommodates guests of all ages, including small to mid-size groups, cross-generational travelers and reunions.

At Tinto & Tapas, a chalkboard displays the menu. It is designed each day to satisfy the most picky or discriminating eater. On the board for all-day grazing? The restaurant serves small-plate specialties the likes of Andalusia calamari, chicken croquettes and plenty of salsas.

The more I explored the property, the more aware I became of how well its Spanish-modern design complements the Mexican spirit.

Opened in 2015, Finest Playa Mujeres is one of five, 5-star properties in the Caribbean that are owned and operated by the family-owned Excellence Luxury Hotels & Resorts Group. The newest member debuts in September in the Dominican Republic.

The combination of Spanish service with Mexican hospitality is ideal for small group travel, especially when arriving with loved ones for a destination family reunion.

All in the family

Finest is the only all-inclusive, luxury, family friendly resort in the Cancun area.

Packages for cross-generational travel are offered under the all-inclusive family umbrella. They are designed so the group’s host never has to think about anything other than having a good time.

All Finest all-inclusive packages include free telephone service to the United States and to Canada. No add-ons. No surprises.

The concierge helps guests put their real lives on hold so family members can design and savor their own experiences. Often, the guests meet up with the group only for meals.

Although restaurants do not accept reservations, the group can arrange private catered dining on the beach; perhaps a pizza dinner from Las Dunas Beach House with salads and wood-burning oven pizzas.

Healthy spa cuisines, as well as vegetarian and gluten-free options are on the menu at every restaurant.

More formal arrangements, say for a closing-night dinner, can be made for Le Petit Plaisir, a white tablecloth restaurant where dining is elevated to an art form. For a starter, consider foie gras cuba libre with cola reduction and lemon jelly. Our closing dinner featured tenderloin filets flambé with cognac and mushroom sauce as the main course. While dessert is always served, be prepared for a tray of elegant petit fours to follow.

Other memorable dining options that can be arranged for the group include a salsa tasting or a gelato tasting.

The resort newsletter is delivered daily; it features who’s where and what’s what. The activity board at the center of the interior grounds posts all the news, like lessons in gun safety and marksmanship at the air rifle range. Guests also can participate in a cocktail experience where they make tropical drinks and carve their containers, too. The entire group can brush up on their Spanish language skills or sign on for an off-property tour.

Off property

If age appropriate, children often accompany parents on excursions off property. There are tours to the Mayan ruins including Chichen Itza; its main castle was named one the new wonders of the world.

Others are organized visits to the Mayan city of Tulum, once a trade port on the turquoise Caribbean Sea. There are snorkel and dive excursions to the second-largest coral reef in the world. The reef runs from north of Quintana Roo to Honduras.

Off-property, golfers can play a round or two on a Greg Norman-designed golf course. Shopping excursions are easily arranged for those looking for handicrafts and luxury items in the markets of Cancun.

On property

Younger members of the group are invited to a Mayan pyramid of their own as part of a water play area. The Mini and Maxi clubs are staffed and complete with a playground and walk-through fountains, a rock-climbing wall and even a zip line.

Teens have a Teens Club that includes a lounge for 12–15-year-olds. There are board games, video games and a palapa area that includes a swimming pool, and pingpong and air hockey tables.

Language lessons are available as are activities from tennis to water sports.

In total, there is an area of 27,000 square feet devoted to youth activities. The activities are divided by ages into three pavilions. For children, the resort offers a mini theater, a mini spa and food and beverage stations at Kids Plaza.

Adult members can spend the day at ONE spa or sign up with a personal trainer during their stay. The entire family can gather at most pools or room pools in the swim-up suites, family suites or those with a plunge pool.

All-inclusive thinking helped to develop the 2016 4-diamond AAA award-winning Finest Playa Mujeres.
