Appomattox: a place, a symbol, and a moment in time when a nation put down its weapons after a bloody war to forge a new story of unity and freedom. The American Civil War Museum, newly reorganized and growing, personalizes the history of this pivotal period for guests. The Appomattox Courthouse at the Museum of the Confederacy in the town of Appomattox, Virginia, is one of several historic locations under the museum’s umbrella. The others, Tredegar and the White House and Museum of the Confederacy, are both located in Richmond.

“We use the lens of real people and their real stories to recount the history,” said Stephanie Arduini, director of education. “We do so through a wealth of primary sources ranging from letters and diaries to photographs and personal effects. The stories of individuals are compelling — rich, complex and evocative testimony that capture events and make them relevant to today.”

Group programming includes a new menu of informal presentations, as well as programs and offerings to suit different interests. One option is to interact with a historical interpreter in examining a set of documents and artifacts on a specific theme.

The Fire! Rifle Musket Program is a hands-on facilitated experience that culminates in the firing of replica period weaponry. Throughout the presentation, visitors learn about the life and challenges of an ordinary soldier. Groups encounter a name and individual story, not a sweeping generalization.

“We also can tailor programs to include information on where a group might be from, or some sites the group may visit to enrich their experience and bring the history home,” Arduini said.

Most sites that fall under the museum’s umbrella are handicap accessible; the White House and Museum of the Confederacy is a notable exception. Discounted group rates are available.
