For new groundbreaking shows on subjects you never expected to see on your TV, laptop or tablet screens, it seems that streaming services are the way to go.
Netflix has been super hot in this department recently. The return of shows like Arrested Development, Wet Hot American Summer and Pee Wee Herman helps to bring in the old fans of popular culture shows. Then new and exclusive shows like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Unbreakable Kimmy Schimt and the superb Stranger Things attract everyone else.
Amazon Prime has been slightly slower out of the gate, but with shows like Lucifer, Mr. Robot, Preacher and the Amazon exclusive show The Man in the High Castle they to seem to be cementing their stake in this area. So it is with great joy that we hear that they are bringing back another long gone show to our screens. The big blue spoon-shouting superhero The Tick will soon be arriving to Amazon’s Pilot Season series as a one off. Fingers crossed this will not stay the case for long.
Created by Ben Edlund in 1986, this lovable, bumbling and slightly mentally insane hero burst his way onto the comic scene and then gain popularity with a much-loved animated series in 1994, and a live action TV series in 2001. The TV show only lasted one season and even though it was not well received at the time, it perfectly captured the comic book mentality and showed a love of the character. Hopefully Amazon is going to keep these main characteristics for their take on the hero.
Here is Amazon’s synopsis of the pilot episode including some of the talent which is involved in the show.
In a world where superheroes have been real for decades, an underdog accountant with zero powers comes to realize his city is owned by a global super villain long-thought dead. As he struggles to uncover this conspiracy, he falls in league with a strange blue superhero. The Tick stars Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy), Griffin Newman (Vinyl), Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), Valorie Curry (House of Lies), Yara Martinez (Jane the Virgin) and Brendan Hines (Scorpion). The Tick is executive produced by Ben Edlund (Supernatural), Barry Josephson (Bones) and Barry Sonnenfeld (A Series of Unfortunate Events), directed by Wally Pfister (The Dark Knight), and written by Edlund. The Tick is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television.
Now many people will recognize Peter Serafinowicz for his roles in Guardians of the Galaxy, Parks and Recreation, Shaun of the Dead and the voice of Darth Maul from The Phantom Menace. He is an incredibly funny man, but whether he can pull off his own series only time will tell. Still, he has the creator of The Tick comic series on hand as executive producer of the show and a whole heap of stars to fill out the cast so things are looking good.
The episode will air on August the 19th so Amazon users can see it then. If you like what you see be sure to give feedback and vote for it as this is the only way we will see more Tick related series in the future.
