Foreign Secretary William Hague visited Cape Town, South Africa on 10 September at the invitation of the South African Minister for International Relations and Cooperation, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, for the tenth UK-South Africa Bilateral Forum. The Foreign Secretary led a delegation of UK Ministers, including Minister for Africa, Mark Simmonds, senior officials across Government and Sir Vernon Ellis, Chair of the British Council.

The Foreign Secretary and Minister Nkoana-Mashabane adopted the Bilateral Forum communiqué which covers the wide range of areas where we work with South Africa, including on foreign policy, trade, development, arts, education and science. The Foreign Secretary and Minister Nkoana-Mashabane agreed further partnerships to meet the objectives of the UK-South Africa strategy, which covers prosperity and sustainable development, security and governance and society.

The Foreign Secretary and Minister Nkoana-Mashabane both welcomed the strong and reliable bilateral relationship. The Foreign Secretary invited Minister Nkoana-Mashabane to the United Kingdom for the next Bilateral Forum to be held in 2015.

The Foreign Secretary previously visited South Africa in February 2012 when he gave a keynote address at the University of the Western Cape on “Britain and South Africa: a 21st century relationship”
