2016 has been a year marked by movie spin-offs, remakes and sequels. In typical Hollywood fashion, what’s old is new again, particularly when it comes to top-grossing movies. Here are some of the highest-grossing movie reboots of the year, as well as one that's expected to make bank at the box office.


‘Rogue One’ Earnings: Not Yet Available

Release Date: Dec. 16, 2016

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is the first Star Wars standalone film to hit theaters. Although not yet released, the spin-off is projected to bring in more than $130 million on opening weekend alone, according to the The Hollywood Reporter. If the predictions hold true, "Rogue One" could become one of the highest-grossing movies of the year.

The film follows a band of unlikely heroes who sets out on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, which is the Empire’s ultimate weapon of annihilation. If the success of 2015's "The Force Awakens" is any indication, "Rogue One" will have audiences flocking to the theaters.

‘Ghostbusters’ Earnings: $229 Million

Release Date: July 15, 2016

A remake of the popular 80s franchise, the new "Ghostbusters" features a female cast, headlined by Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Chris Hemsworth also appears in the reboot.

While many were excited for this gender-swapped comedy, the 2016 "Ghostbusters" has lacked the fanfare of the original films, making the possibility of a sequel unlikely.

‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows’ Earnings: $246 million

Release Date: June 3, 2016

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” is the sequel to the 2014 film and brings back stars Megan Fox and Will Arnett. The film is part of the TMNT franchise, which includes several other films dating back to 1990 and a number of television incarnations. The franchise is based on a comic book series.

‘The Conjuring 2’ Earnings: $320 million

Release Date: June 10, 2016

Released three years after the original, “The Conjuring 2” hit theaters in June with stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson at the helm. The film received a People’s Choice Awards nomination along with strong audience feedback. According to director James Wan, a third installment of the successful series is currently in the works.

‘Now You See Me 2’ Earnings: $335 Million

Release Date: June 10, 2016

Everyone's favorite team of illusionists is back in this sequel to the 2013 film. Returning stars include Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine. Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, also joins the cast this time around.

‘Star Trek Beyond’ Earnings: $343 Million

Release Date: July 22, 2016

“Star Trek Beyond” is the latest movie in the expansive Star Trek franchise and the third installment in the current reboot series. The film features all the fan-favorite stars, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana. A fourth Star Trek is already in the works.

‘The Legend of Tarzan’ Earnings: $357 Million

Release Date: July 1, 2016

After leaving the jungle for a new life, Tarzan returns home in the “The Legend of Tarzan,” only to encounter new dangers and challenges. Alexander Skarsgård stars as Tarzan in this movie adaptation. The actor is best known for the HBO series “True Blood,” on which he played vampire Eric Northman

‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ Earnings: $390 Million

Release Date: June 24, 2016

After two decades, the Earth is once again under threat of an Independence Day invasion in this long-awaited sequel. While Will Smith does not reprise his role, the film does feature returning stars Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A. Fox and Bill Pullman. Liam Hemsworth has a leading role in the movie.

Despite its blockbuster cast, the film failed to achieve the box office success of its predecessor. According to Variety, the 1996 film was the highest-grossing movie of the year, earning $817 million worldwide.

‘Jason Bourne' Earnings: $415 Million

Release Date: July 29, 2016

"Jason Bourne" is the latest film in the popular Bourne series. The movie boasts a number of stars, including Matt Damon as Bourne, Julia Stiles and Tommy Lee Jones. Although no official announcement of another Bourne spin-off has been made, Damon is open to the possibility, according to an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

‘Kung Fu Panda 3' Earnings: $520 Million

Release Date: Jan. 29, 2016

The furry and feathered characters of "Kung Fu Panda 3" are voiced by an impressive collection of Hollywood stars. Returning actors include Jack Black, Bryan Cranston, Dustin Hoffman and Angelina Jolie. Thanks to the box office success of the third film in the series, a fourth “Kung Fu Panda” is already in the works.

‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Earnings: $544 Million

Release Date: May 27, 2016

The latest film in the successful X-Men series, “X-Men: Days of Future Past" boasts an all-star cast, including Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy. In the movie, the Marvel Comics characters gather to face their greatest challenge yet: world-destroying mutant Apocalypse. According to various sources, a new X-Men movie will begin shooting in May 2017.

‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ Earnings: $611 Million

Release Date: Nov. 18, 2016

"Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" is the first movie in a new, five-film franchise. Inspired by the same-named fictional book mentioned in the Harry Potter series, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" takes place in New York in 1926. The story details the adventures of the book’s writer, Newt Scamander, who is played by Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne in the film.

‘Doctor Strange’ Earnings: $637 Million

Release Date: Nov. 4, 2016

“Doctor Strange” is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. In the film, Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Dr. Stephen Strange, a neurosurgeon who finds himself drawn to the world of mystic arts. The actor is best known for playing Sherlock Holmes in the TV series, "Sherlock."

‘Suicide Squad’ Earnings: $746 Million

“Suicide Squad” tells the story of a group of villains who sets out to save the world. The cast includes a number of Hollywood heavyweights, including Will Smith and Jared Leto. The third installment in the DC Extended Universe, "Suicide Squad" took home two Teen Choice Awards.

‘Deadpool’ Earnings: $782 Million

This off-beat action-comedy scored big at the box office, due in large part to the efforts of Ryan Reynolds, who plays main character, Wade Wilson, also known as Deadpool. The film also enjoyed some critical success, winning a Teen Choice Award and two MTV Movie Awards. A sequel is already in the works.

‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ Earnings: $873 Million

Release Date: March 25, 2016

Batman goes up against the Man of Steel in this film, which enjoyed superhero-sized earnings at the box office. The movie, which brought together two popular superhero franchises, features several notable Hollywood stars. Ben Affleck play Batman, Amy Adams is intrepid reporter Lois Lane and Henry Cavill reprises his role as Superman.

‘The Jungle Book’ Earnings: $967 Million

Release Date: April 15, 2016

“The Jungle Book” is a 2016 live-action film based on Rudyard Kipling’s classic novel. It’s also a remake of the 1967 animated Disney flick of the same name. Celebrity stars, such as Bill Murray, voice the film's many animal characters.

‘Captain America: Civil War’ Earnings: $1.2 Billion

Release Date: May 6, 2016

“Captain America: Civil War” is the latest film in the Captain America series, which began in 2011. The movie features a number of notable stars, such as Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans as Captain America himself. The film won two Teen Choice Awards.
