32. Honolulu

Hawaii is certainly paradise. But if you don't get a head start on travel planning, it can be hard on your wallet especially if you visit during the holidays.

Flights to Honolulu over Thanksgiving and Christmas are, generally, more expensive than most destinations on our list, including the international ones. One tip to help save money on flights to Hawaii: Fly out U.S. West Coast cities, such as Los Angeles, Seattle, San Diego and San Francisco, recommends FareCompare.com.

But airfare isn't the only travel expense you'll need to watch out for. Honolulu received the worst hotel score of the holiday destinations on our list, with an average cost per night of $155.33 during Christmas and $97 during Thanksgiving.

31. Sydney

Visiting Australia over Christmas is an expensive trip. Considering how far a flight to Australia is from the U.S., it isn't too surprising Sydney posts the worst flight score for holiday travel.

To save money on airfare to Australia, figure out the best times to book your holiday travel. Use sites such as CheapAir.com, FareCompare.com and Skyscanner.net to compare flight costs and find travel deals.

30. Amsterdam

Flying to Europe is always a major cost. But choosing expensive dining options is one of the biggest mistakes people make when visiting Europe. Amsterdam is notorious for having fairly expensive dining prices on top of high airfare. Two people having dinner at a mid-range restaurant can expect to pay nearly $67.

Despite having the fourth-worst food, drink and cab score, there are ways to save money on other expenses in Amsterdam. For example, buying the I amsterdam City Card can give you free access to some of the city’s attractions and transportation, and the Amsterdam Nightlife Ticket grants you seven days of unlimited access to eight different nightclubs.

29. Paris

Getting to Paris will cost you, but accommodations aren't too bad. Lodging during Thanksgiving costs about the same as staying in Las Vegas over the holiday, and affordable hotels make spending Christmas in Paris cheaper than many other destinations on the list, including U.S. cities.

If you're trying to get your drink on, however, Paris suffers from the third-worst food, drink and cab score. The main culprit for this poor score: beverage prices. Both soft drinks and beer cost the most in Paris versus all the other cities listed.

28. London

Like Paris, London isn't easy on your wallet when it comes to sustenance. London posted the worst food, drink and cab score thanks largely to the most expensive average taxi fare and the priciest low-range restaurant cost.

Because taxi fare is expensive, try saving money on transportation in London by grabbing an Oyster Card to get cheaper fares on the subway. "Use public transportation as much as possible," said Bryan Tighe, co-founder of BudgetYourTrip. "Hiring taxis is very expensive when you can take the bus, subway, etc. Walk whenever possible."

This travel tip doesn't only apply to London, however — oftentimes, public transportation will be your cheapest option in any city you visit during the holidays.

27. Rome

With the fourth-worst flight score, flights to Rome over the holidays are more expensive than any other European destination on our list. As with other European cities, hotel prices over Thanksgiving and Christmas are pretty affordable in Rome compared to many other destinations.

One thing to watch out for when traveling to Rome and other European cities: tourist scams that can cost you. From the "Newspaper Trick" to "The Falling Lady," there are some scams that target tourists and their wallets.

26. New York City

Frequently ranked among the most expensive cities in the U.S. and in the world, New York City's cost of living will likely impact your wallet during your holiday vacation. A mid-range restaurant bill for two costs about $80 in New York City, the highest price out of all 32 destinations. And, "inexpensive" restaurants and beers are costly as well, giving the city the second worst food, drink and cab score.

Don't look at the hotel prices for savings opportunities, either, as the Big Apple holds the fifth-worst hotel score, with both Thanksgiving and Christmas stays costing more than $70 per night.

25. Dublin

Although not as expensive as neighboring London, Dublin food and drinks can put a dent in your wallet. Restaurants and beers cost more in Dublin than in the majority of other listed destinations. But despite these drawbacks, Dublin is actually pretty fair on cost.

For example, this Irish city has the best holiday flight score out of the European destinations on our list. And once you're there, you can save money on transportation using an Irish Explorer Pass.

24. Tokyo

Hotel stays during the holidays in Tokyo cost more than the other Asian destinations on our list. And taxi fares are very pricey, costing $5.71 per mile, on average.

23. Boston

Travel planning website GoEuro.com ranked Boston as the sixth-most expensive city in the world for accommodation. In our study, Boston posts the third-worst hotel score during the holidays.

Thanksgiving and Christmas lights to Boston are cheaper than most international destinations, but not compared to most domestic cities. Dining and beer also are on the pricier side, so make sure you wisely budget for these expenses.

22. Washington, DC

To reduce the cost of holiday accommodations in Washington, DC, you might want to stay somewhere outside of the central area.

Arlington, for example, is a convenient and affordable area to stay outside of DC. If you're looking to stay within DC, neighborhoods in the Northeast quadrant of the city along the Red Line are good choices, according to SmartDestinations.com.

21. Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires has the third-worst holiday flight score out of the 32 destinations on our list — and this is primarily what brings the city down to No. 21. Meanwhile, the city shines with the fifth-best food, drink and cab score, as well as the fourth-best hotel score for Thanksgiving and Christmas stays.

20. Charleston, S.C.

Charleston has the fourth-worst hotel score for stays during the holidays. You can likely save money on a hotel, however, by booking a room outside of downtown. But, that might come with the cost of renting a car in order to get around.

19. Miami

Food, drink, cab and holiday hotel costs in Miami are on the higher end of the destinations on our list.

But as with other destinations on our list, some of the best affordable activities can be found by getting a city pass. In Miami's case, the Go Miami Card lets you save up to 55 percent on top attractions, such as the Miami Seaquarium and Zoo Miami.

18. San Francisco

San Francisco has a high cost of living, so it isn’t too surprising that the city has the fifth-worst food, drink and cab score. On the flip side, this Bay Area city boasts the third-best holiday flight score.

Rio de Janeiro is a great city to visit and pretty affordable, too. However, holiday airfare will likely be expensive — the city has the worst flight score in our study behind only Sydney.

In better news, visiting Rio de Janeiro during the holidays can be cheap when it comes to daily expenses. Rio has the fourth best food, drink and cab score as well as the second best hotel score.

15. Hong Kong

Many day-to-day expenses in Hong Kong are pretty affordable, ranking No. 5 for the cheapest taxi fare. The city also offers affordable restaurant prices.

As with other holiday destinations, you might want to get Hong Kong's metro pass: the Octopus card. These cards are a convenient way to pay for public transportation throughout Hong Kong.

That being said, Octopus cards are only really efficient, however, if you plan to stay in Hong Kong for at least a couple of months, according to BudgetYourTrip. So, your holiday vacation would have to be a long one.

14. Los Angeles

Dining and taxi fares in Los Angeles are on the pricier side, as are the hotel rates over Thanksgiving and Christmas. But, Los Angeles offers plenty to do during the holidays.

For Thanksgiving, TimeOut Los Angeles suggested Artisan House and Cafe Gratitude as solid, affordable restaurants to have turkey dinner. For affordable Christmas-time activities, you can go ice skating in Pershing Square or check out the Christmas lights in Beverly Hills.

13. Chicago

With the fourth-best flight score, Chicago isn’t too hard on your wallet when it comes to airfare. Thanksgiving hotel rates, however, could make a dent in your budget — Chicago’s $71.67 per night average is the sixth highest on our list.

12. Jackson, Wyo.

Planning a trip to Yellowstone for the holidays? Just be aware that flying into Jackson Hole Airport can be tricky because there are only three major carriers that the airport services: American, Delta and United Airlines. Plus, most flights into Jackson require connecting flights and direct flights are less common, according to Jackson Hole Traveler.

Perhaps that's why Jackson has the worst flight score out of the domestic destinations on our list, with the exception of Honolulu.

11. Denver

Flying to Denver for Thanksgiving and Christmas isn’t too expensive compared to the other destinations on our list. In terms of getting around, the cost of local transportation is a little over $50 a day, according to BudgetYourTrip. The city’s taxi fares are on the cheaper side as well.

10. Orlando

Looking for VIP treatment at Disney World this holiday season? You might be able to afford it thanks to cheaper vacation costs.

Airfare to Orlando over Thanksgiving and Christmas is on the cheaper side compared to most cities on our list. Hotel stays during the holidays aren't too high, and taxi fares are just around the average of all U.S. cities on our list.

9. Toronto

Toronto offers visitors plenty to do over the holidays, and most of its scores are average to better-than-average, such as its flight and hotel scores. For affordable attractions, Niagara Falls is a relatively short trip by car or public transportation. And, the St. Lawrence Market is a great destination for food lovers.

8. Las Vegas

Out of the U.S. destinations on our list, Las Vegas has the best holiday hotel score. Thanksgiving and Christmas airfare to Las Vegas is affordable too, as the city boasts the best flight score as well.

There is a very notable drawback to a holiday vacation in Las Vegas: cab fare. Costing $4 per mile, on average, taxi fares in Las Vegas are the second-most expensive of all the American cities on our list, behind Honolulu.

7. Nashville

Nashville taxi fares are generally cheaper than most destinations listed, and the city sports the fifth-best holiday flight score.

To save even more money on your holiday vacation, Tighe of BudgetYourTrip suggested eating street food, or eating at "dive" restaurants. Nashville offers plenty of street food, including famous food trucks like The Grilled Cheeserie and Wicked Kitchen.

6. New Orleans

Similar to Nashville and Las Vegas, airfare to New Orleans for Thanksgiving and Christmas is pretty cheap compared to other places. The Big Easy has the second-best flight score, but its hotel rates during the holidays are only mediocre.

The biggest highlight: At $2.50 for a domestic beer, New Orleans offers the cheapest beer out of all the U.S. destinations on our list.

4. Vancouver

3. Bangkok

2. Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Hotels in Cabo San Lucas are cheaper than most places on our list, but not as cheap as the No. 1 best affordable place to spend your holiday vacation. Cabo is also a bit more expensive to fly to Cabo versus the No. 1 vacation spot.

What is great for your wallet is the low cost of daily expenses and necessities. Boasting the best food, drink and cab score, Cabo offers the third-cheapest taxi fares, the cheapest mid-range restaurant price and cheapest price of domestic beer on our list.

1. Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Sure, there are plenty of hidden expenses in Mexico that creep up during vacations. But Playa del Carmen is the No. 1 the best affordable place to spend your holiday vacation. With the sixth-best hotel score, hotels in Playa del Carmen beat the per night rate in Cabo San Lucas, as does airfare during the holidays.

Similar to Cabo, taxis, restaurants and alcohol are quite cheaper compared to other destinations. But you could potentially save even more money by identifying cheap vacation packages. According to data from Expedia, people traveling internationally who book travel as a package can expect to save the most in Mexico. Destination packages, including Cancun and Playa del Carmen, are providing savings of more than 25 percent.

Methodology: This study ranked 32 popular holiday tourist destinations and examined five factors — hotels, flights, taxi fare, food and drink — divided up into three categories:

Hotel Score, based on hotel prices using the three lowest nightly rates and calculating the average cost for Thanksgiving week (Nov. 20 to Nov. 26, 2016) and Christmas week (Dec. 22 to Dec. 28, 2016); hotel costs were sourced from Hotels.com on 9/21/2016. 2)

Flight Score, based on flight prices sourced from Google Flights on 9/21/16. For each city, the cheapest round-trip fare for each destination was calculated based on flight prices for both Thanksgiving week (Nov. 20 to Nov. 26, 2016) and Christmas week (Dec. 22 to Dec. 28, 2016) from the two largest airports in the U.S., ATL and LAX.

Food, Drink and Cab Score, based on the average cost of taxi fare, a meal at an inexpensive restaurant, a meal for two at a mid-range restaurant, soft drinks and domestic beer, sourced from Numbeo on 9/21/2016.

Each factor was given a score of 0-1 (with 0 being the cheapest) and weighted equally against each other for a total combined score.
