GHS vascular surgeon Bruce Snyder, MD, received the Order of the Palmetto on Oct. 28. The Order is the highest civilian honor presented by the Governor of South Carolina. It is awarded in recognition of a person’s lifetime achievements and contributions to the state.
On this same day, Dr. Snyder was also named Physician of the Year by the South Carolina Medical Association (SCMA). The SCMA award is presented annually to a physician who gives back to the community and honors them for their service to South Carolina.
While presenting the Physician of the Year Award, the SCMA had this to say about Dr. Snyder:
“Dr. Snyder, your passion for medicine and healthcare are far reaching. However, your love for your family and your partnership with colleagues in Greenville and across the country far exceeds anything else you have done. We all stand in congratulatory honor of you today. Thank you for your leadership, your kindness, your passion to serve those that are often times forgotten and your ‘poignant comments.’ To honor you today was a thrill for each of us. Congratulations!”
Dr. Snyder is a former SCMA president and has been involved in many projects that have benefitted the state, including ScaleDown South Carolina – the state’s obesity prevention plan. He also served as chairman for the Alliance for a Healthier South Carolina and has been instrumental in the formation of the statewide Childhood Obesity Taskforce.
While SCMA president, Dr. Snyder led the effort to encourage hospitals and healthcare organizations to remove sugary drinks from their campuses, including GHS, which removed sugary drinks from its cafeterias and vending machines in March 2015 as part of its ChooseWell initiative.
Dr. Snyder received his medical degree from Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C., and completed his residency training in general surgery at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash. He was a fellow in vascular surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.
Dr. Snyder is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery, the Southern Association for Vascular Surgery, the South Carolina Vascular Surgical Society, the American College of Surgeons and the Southeastern Surgical Congress. His special interests include Cerebrovascular Disease. He is board certified in Vascular Surgery.
