My Steven Universe gemsona, Blue Topaz.
Blue Topaz is an Era 1 Homeworld gem and a member of Blue Diamond’s Court. She and her other blue and yellow sisters are Beautician Gems, called upon by the Aristocracy to treat their hair, provide massages, and cool them on warm days with their wind powers. If her client has a contagious condition, Blue Topaz can use her levitation powers to soothe their ailments with specially made ointments each Topaz is taught to mix just after bursting from the ground.
Because real life Blue Topazes are associated with understanding, fighting off negative emotions, and peaceful communication, Blue Topaz will provide friendly conversation with her clients, similar to a stylist in an Earth salon. Though some of her clients are snootier than others, and refuse conversations with a lower ranking gem, many will be gracious enough to have friendly banter with her. Blue Topaz welcomes it because she’s a very good listener and loves hearing the newest gossip going on around Homeworld.
During Era 1, her most important client was always Blue Diamond, who would come every so often and sit in a chair BT would have just for her while she provided her usual hair and nail treatments. Though Blue Diamond wouldn’t speak of business matters, she would humor BT by conversing on the scheduled weather of that day, upcoming meetings and balls, and what her involvement might be in them, since she specializes in beauty treatments meant for those kind of events.
After the shattering of Pink Diamond, Blue Diamond more or less ceased her visits, causing the Topaz to honestly miss her and the ever gentle Blue Pearl’s company. When BD wants her to prepare the aristocracy for their next party or meeting, she’ll usually send a spare Lapis Lazuli and/or a Ruby guard to relay the news.
There are some things she will not converse about with other Gems. Her self conscious nature and her tendency to stick to the rules keeps her from discussing deep philosophical ideas reserved for the aristocrats.
The weather, their health, and gossip is all she needs.
She also wouldn’t dream of speaking of the Earth or the lack of a fourth Diamond. To do so would cause a risen eyebrow at best and a distasteful look on her client’s face at worst. She is a middle class gem after all; best not to risk anything.
Being a middle class Beautician, she’s more respected than a low ranking Quartz or Pearl, but isn’t nowhere near the caliber of Holly Blue Agate or any Sapphire. That, however, doesn’t stop her from being greatly concerned with what every gem thinks of her. She wants to live a happy, immortal life, pleasing and replenishing her clients. Whether it’s a lowly Pearl of a Diamond herself, she yearns to please everyone.
This is a con however. She doesn’t understand that it’s impossible to please everyone, but she refuses to accept that idea. She doesn’t want anyone to think badly of her.
