Myra here.
We are excited to share photographs every Tuesday from our recent or long-ago travels, or just everyday stuff that appealed to our mindful eye and sharp sensibilities as captured through fleeting images.
Catching the Sun in Maldives
One of my greatest joys while I was in Maldives with my family was witnessing the sunset. I was not able to wake up early enough for me to see the sun rise, sadly. But I am hoping that these gorgeous photos of the sun set would be enough to also inspire you to catch the sun this evening before it goes to bed.
“Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.”
― Rabindranath Tagore, Stray Birds
“Dusk is just an illusion because the sun is either above the horizon or below it. And that means that day and night are linked in a way that few things are there cannot be one without the other yet they cannot exist at the same time. How would it feel I remember wondering to be always together yet forever apart?”
― Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook
“When the sun has set, no candle can replace it.”
― George R.R. Martin
“Twilight fell: The sky turned to a light, dusky purple littered with tiny silver stars.”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
“Can you see the sunset real good on the West side? You can see it on the East side too.”
― S.E. Hinton, The Outsiders
I like how my husband was able to capture me catching the sunset on my camera phone.
Chaser of the Sun.
“Soon it got dusk, a grapy dusk, a purple dusk over tangerine groves and long melon fields; the sun the color of pressed grapes, slashed with burgandy red, the fields the color of love and Spanish mysteries.”
― Jack Kerouac, On the Road
“A large drop of sun lingered on the horizon and then dripped over and was gone, and the sky was brilliant over the spot where it had gone, and a torn cloud, like a bloody rag, hung over the spot of its going. And dusk crept over the sky from the eastern horizon, and darkness crept over the land from the east.”
― John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath
I especially love how the sun is being framed by the clouds here – can you see it?
“The sky, at sunset, looked like a carnivorous flower.”
― Roberto Bolaño, 2666
So fiery. So fierce. Such bright orange.
And the sunset itself on such waves of ether
That I just can’t comprehend
Whether it is the end of the day, the end of the world,
Or the mystery of mysteries in me again.”
― Anna Akhmatova, The Complete Poems of Anna Akhmatova
“One day,’ you said, ‘I watched the sunset forty-three times!’
And a little later you added:
‘You know, when one is that sad, one can get to love the sunset.’
‘Were you that sad, then, on the day of the forty-three sunset?’
But the prince made no answer.”
― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince
What a joy it would be to witness the sun rise and set every single day.
