Built in 2009, the Escala building is located at the corner of 4th and Virginia in downtown Seattle. Christian Grey’s address is unit 3001 at 1920 4th Ave., Seattle, WA. The building has 31 stories and 269 luxury condo units. Luxury amenities include 24-hour concierge service, a private spa, a gym with a yoga studio, a lap pool, a theater, a game room, a meeting room, a wine cave, and on-site restaurants and luxury retailers. Residents at the Escala have included three Major League Baseball players.
Real Estate as Literary Inspiration
Writer E.L. James used a realty listing as inspiration for Christian Grey’s residence. The luxury accommodations at the Escala are a perfect fit for the wealthy CEO character. Forbes estimates his net worth at $2.5 billion, landing him the spot of the 8th wealthiest fictional character. The actual penthouse does not include the Red Room or the rooftop helicopter landing pad.
The High Price of Fame
Tourists show up at the building and ask if it’s a hotel. Median sales price for apartments in the building have increased 75% since 2010.
Costs
The penthouse sold for $8 million in 2016. The price per square foot is $1,547, and the HOA dues are $3,916 per month.
For Rent
