The pending ballot prop, as reported by the Sacramento Bee, would “further restrict the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Californians and force people to give up lawfully possessed personal property,” says the gun rights group.

Today, civil rights advocates at Firearms Policy Coalition responded to a reported ballot initiative proposed by Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom that would, if passed, further restrict the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Californians and force people to give up lawfully possessed personal property.

“If Gavin Newsom wants to declare war on law-abiding gun owners and Second Amendment rights, we’re certainly going to bring the fight to him,” said Firearms Policy Coalition President Brandon Combs.

The reported ballot initiative would, if passed, make numerous changes to state law, including:

— Requiring that gun owners with “large capacity magazines” sell them, take them out of state, or turn them in to law enforcement to be destroyed.

— Requiring background checks for all ammunition purchases and that dealers acquire an ammunition sales permit. Retailers also would be required to report lost or stolen ammunition.

— Requiring that all lost or stolen firearms be reported to law enforcement.

Combs continued, “We are already working with legal counsel to evaluate all possible options and ramping up an opposition campaign as we speak.”

Newsom would need nearly 366,000 valid signatures to qualify the proposal for the ballot. From there, it would be an up or down vote by the people of California.

“This is going to come down to votes. Gun owners need to start actively working on this now and be ready to show up in 2016,” stressed Combs.

“Protecting civil rights and lawfully owned personal property from police state gun grabbers like Gavin Newsom has to be everyone’s first priority.”
