The Victim Services Section will again launch National Crime Victims’ Rights Week on April 10, 2016, with our 4th Annual 5K Walk and Candlelight Vigil. This free event will be held at the Fairfax Corner Center off Monument Drive in Fairfax, Virginia. We invite crime victims, survivors, family members, friends, and the community to come out to raise awareness for victims’ rights in Northern Virginia and show their support for all victims of crime.
The 2016 National Crime Victims’ Rights Week will take place from April 10 to 16. This annual observance, first designated by President Ronald Reagan in 1981, seeks to increase general public awareness of, and knowledge about the wide range of rights and services available to people who have been victimized by crime. This year’s theme-Serving Victims. Building Trust, Restoring Hope--underscores the importance of early intervention and victim services in establishing trust with victims, which in turn begins to restore their hope for healing and recovery.
Participants are encouraged to arrive at 4:30 p.m. to check in and retrieve your T-shirt as well as browse the vendor tables that will be on display at our resource fair. During that time, you will also have the opportunity to listen to the talented jazz Performance of E & Me Contemporary Jazz Band.
Numerous special guests will be attending this event, to include David Culver, NBC4 News, as the Master of Ceremonies, Raymond F. Morrogh, Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney, Bill Eastham, victim and survivor speaker, and Fairfax County Police Department’s Chief Edwin C. Roessler Jr.
In addition, to the resource fair, we are excited to announce a new display this year. This gives participants an opportunity to honor themselves or a loved one at our interactive canvas art table hosted by one of our homicide survivors.
