The Lunar New Year is the most important festival on the Chinese calendar, and nowhere celebrates it with greater aplomb than The Peninsula Hong Kong. With her storied history and iconic architecture, the city’s Grande Dame is set to welcome the New Year in signature style through a variety of special events, promotions and offers celebrating the Year of the Monkey.

The festivities begin with a traditional lion dance in The Lobby on Monday, 8 February 2016, the first day of the Lunar New Year. The celebrations continue throughout the hotel, with elaborate decorations featuring peach blossoms, red flowers and lanterns to symbolise good luck, as well as pink plum blossoms and kumquat bushes laden with golden-orange fruit to bring prosperity. These elegant adornments provide an auspicious backdrop against which guests can enjoy a beautifully crafted collection of curated experiences for all the family.

Chinese New Year at The Peninsula Hotels

Adding a touch of signature élan to another cherished Lunar New Year tradition, The Peninsula is offering suite guests the opportunity to enjoy a tour around the city in the hotel’s customised MINI Clubman for up to three hours during their stay. According to Chinese tradition, locals embark on a journey around the city during Lunar New Year to bring luck and prosperity for the year ahead.

Known as the “Lucky Grand Tour”, it symbolises the completion of a full circle, and guests can enjoy their own “Lucky Ride” by visiting a variety of auspicious spots around town, with suggested locations including Wong Tai Sin Temple, where guests can “borrow fortune” from the Guan Yin, and The Peak, where the higher altitude is believed to bring better luck.

Those who wish to take their Lucky Grand Tour to even greater heights can book a “Fortune Flight”, a breathtaking helicopter tour around Victoria Harbour that shows off Hong Kong at its very best. After completing this lofty odyssey to bring luck and prosperity for the year ahead, guests are invited to enjoy Afternoon Tea in The Lobby, with the added bonus of guaranteed table reservations to avoid the queues. Priced at HK$ 2,157 per person or HK$ 4,226 for two people, the Fortune Flight can be reserved by calling +852 2802 0200 or by e-mailing chp@heliservices.com.hk.

New Year Dining Promotions

On 9 February, The Grande Dame will present a series of special menus throughout the hotel to fete the occasion – from decadent buffets at The Verandah and Imasa to multi-course delights at Gaddi’s, Chesa, Felix, Spring Moon and The Lobby, guests are spoiled for choice. That evening, The Peninsula Hong Kong extends a warm invitation to all restaurant patrons to gather on the Sun Terrace for complimentary Champagne.
