Julius Billeter began his career as a genealogical researcher in 1896. He remained in Switzerland gathering names from the records for one year. He obtained moneys and subscriptions from people to fund his research activities.  It was reported that he gathered 100,000 names in that first year.  It took him the following year to prepare the names for temple work.  In 1898 he was appointed a research agent for the Genealogical Society of Utah for Germany and Switzerland. He remained in Switzerland till his death in 1957 except for {{Wikipedia|Julius_Billeter|Julius Billeter}}some intervening years.  He was a respected genealogist that allowed him access to parish registers and civil registers in an age when records were scattered in different localities and credentials were required to view the records.  All his activities were funded by subscription or moneys from people who wanted to know more about their ancestry. It was reported that he lived a frugal life and the moneys were just enough to make a living.<ref>Julius C Billeter, Julius Billeter, pioneer Swiss genealogist : a man of faith and action

The genealogies and names he gathered is quite impressive.  When
appraoching
his work one must realize there are [https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Switzerland_Compiled_Genealogies  some inaccuracies] in his work due to the sketchy nature of  some  records, which maybe overcome by additional study of the various families found in the registers of a particulate parish.

People have been submitting names from Julius Billeter's work to the Church since 1910.  Despite the shortcomings of his work, it has become a standard for Swiss Genelaogy.  Many Swiss families will be found in the [https://familysearch.org/search/collection/2060211  Family Group Records Collection, Archives Section, 1942-1969].  This collection is useful in that one can compare what is on Family Tree and what was originally submitted by members of the church.
