JUNIPER DJINN

Clarinet dreamscapes amongst a sea of melodious waltzes, the billowing sounds of early American jazz, gypsy jazz, and Balkan folk music make up the core sounds of Juniper Djinn. The duos originals reflect a familiar feeling of 30s & 40s nostalgia and timeless tunes ingrained deep within traditional American and European jazz. The duo is best known for their live performances in which they play an array of genres spanning across decades of time and regularly features other musicians from across the globe.

Singer, clarinet player, and rhythm guitarist Jessica Fleet is the main vocal of the group with a voice that has been described as an angel and a demon singing in harmony with her powerful vocals, dynamic vocal range, and deep growl. Famed Baby Gramps quoted her as his “favorite singer” and compared her to the great Bessie Johnson. “That voice is a force of nature and hearing it’s a bright balm shining like a birth cake emerging from a dark wood”. – Charlie Unhau

Multi-instrumentalist Bill Stoller is the other half of the duo with his incredible, studious guitar playing, rhythmic accompaniment, accordion and upright bass on the duos albums. With over a decade of experience playing in different bands and touring Juniper Djinn brings a transformative atmosphere of sound and musicians with each and every show.

Hotel Congress & KXCI are excited for another year of the Tucson Rock Lottery as the heart of Club Congress Weekend!

At 9am on Saturday August 30th, twenty five of Tucson’s most talented musicians will gather together to form brand-new bands at random by drawing names out of a hat. They will write and learn three original songs, learn one cover, and perform all in under 12 hours. The epic culmination of their collaboration will happen on the plaza stage in a celebration of all the ingenuity the Tucson music scene has to offer.

All proceeds from this event supports KXCI Community Radio, a 501c3 non profit committed to connecting the communities of Tucson and Southern Arizona to each other – and the world – with informative, engaging, and creative community-based programming.

Yuno’s full-length debut, Blest, out May 16 on Sub Pop, finds the enigmatic indie-pop visionary transforming the emo-tinged suburban malaise of his 2018 Moodie EP into more expansive, widescreen pop drama — suited for big moves and bigger stages. The kaleidoscopic sound he devised as a millennial hermit in his childhood bedroom in Florida has since broadened his horizons, taking him on tour with Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Superorganism, and soundtracking various series for Netflix and HBO. Imbued with elements of dream-pop, rock, trap, and psychedelia, his eclectic songs serve as bids for love and connection, which especially in the fractured era of social media, have resonated with many listeners who find solace in his vulnerability.

Los Yesterdays are a Chicano soul band from Los Angeles based around the creative collaboration between Gabriel Rowland and Victor Benavides. They began working together when Rowland – a drummer by trade, then creaky and exhausted from waking up at dawn to work construction – decided to channel those struggles into song. He contacted Benavides, a former bandmate of Rowland’s deceased brother, to record the soul ballads that Southland Chicanos call “oldies,” the best of Black American sweet soul music from the 60s, 70s and early 80s. The Chicano obsession with soul music began in the mid 1950s, when young Chicanos, many of whom were first-generation immigrants raised on their parents’ mariachi and norteño records, were searching for a music of their own. They began in the smog-spitting gas guzzlers and carpeted living rooms and shoe-melting playground blacktop of the 1970s.

Welcome to the Labor Day Psychedelic Summit w/ Spaceface, Jesika Von Rabbit and Kulululu!

Doors 7pm | Show 7:30pm | Advance $20 / Day of Show $25 | 16+

—SPACEFACE—Spaceface is a self-described “Retro Futurist Dream Rock” (but you can call them psychedelic-pop) band from Memphis, TN and Los Angeles, CA, active since 2012. Always eavesdropping on the Universe whispering its chaotic will, the groovy bunch harnesses the transcendent pulse of the spacetime continuum into catchy songs that whirl and twirl, bend and stretch, attract and propel. Their unique alloy of dream-pop, funk rock and post-disco, charged by the Sun, ultimately shines way past our collective bedtime, akin to a glow-in-the-dark Slime Science Lab kit.

—JESIKA VON RABBIT—Mind-bending, sexy, weird, and endearing, Jesika von Rabbit’s art is full of utter madness, brilliance, and complexity. Intelligent, whimsical, vulnerable, and sarcastic, her lyrical content is one of the observer, the questioner, and the contrarian.

Live, she is a sight to behold: dancing, transcendent, and confrontational, garbed in a skintight technicolor bodysuit. Her stage show features the Grundles, her Wonka-esque dancers who interpret the set with an array of amusing costumes and Vaudevillian skits, and long-time bassist Lee Joseph (who doubles on guitar on her recordings).

–Kulululu–Kulululu has traveled long and far to finally arrive on earth. While here, Kulululu is in search of the answers to the questions; why? and why not? You may not understand what they are saying. You may not understand why they look the way they do. They may not understand these things either. What’s important is that time is continuous, and without it we cannot find our way back to where we started.
