Have you ever thought of the history and the importance of flags? People have used flags for over 4000 years. Flags come in different sizes, shapes, and colors. They can be used for special events, or to represent something special, or give a special message. Think about all the times you have seen a flag and what was the occasion? In America each one of our states has its own flag to represent that state. As a whole country we have one red, white, and blue flag to represent the United States of America. I love to see our flag waving in the breeze. This past Independence Day there is one town nearby that lines the main street with the "Stars and Stripes." I have my own "Old Glory" hanging from my porch.
My block for the hop is one of the symbols of our country. The flag. I have been collecting the Quiltmaker's 100 blocks magazine since they came out. This block is in the very first issue. It is called Patriotic Pinwheel by Susan McDermott. When I saw it in the magazine I knew one day I would make this block. Now is the time. My block is done by hand applique using the back basting technique. You can see a tutorial on my side bar if you would like to learn how to do it.
I decided to make my block into a mini quilt. So I practiced my free motion quilting. I used the pencil first to practice the design. Then it was time to quilt the block. This is the backside of the block.
Here is my finished block!
Now for the giveaway! For my American friends I have a wool door knob hanger that I made and a fat quarter of red and white fabric.
For my friends in other countries I will send you a half yard of red, white, and blue fabric.
All I need you to do is answer this question to be entered in the giveaway! Do you hang a flag from your country outside to show your patriotism? Also, make sure to let me know which country you are from. I will announce the two winners on July 10th.
After you get done on my blog why not go over to the other blogs for today and see what they made. You can see the whole schedule by clicking on the button at Janes Fabrics. Thanks Jane for being our fabulous hostess for this blog hop. Thanks to Madame Samm for putting the fun idea out there for us to participate.

Lovely block, Carrie! It looks beautiful in those fabrics and makes an awesome tabletopper. Thanks so much for sharing!
I like your mini-quilt on its stand.
I live in the UK and this year there are a lot of Union Flags on display as it is the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics!
Congratulations on making the block you have wanted to do where you certainly chose the right time & place. The Australian flag is red, white & blue with the Union Jack in top left hand corner, underneath a 7-pointed star for each of the States and all of the Territories. The right hand side on the blue background is the Southern Cross constellation only visible in the Southern Hemisphere.
I do not have the flag at home but it flies proudly in my heart & soul.
Thank you for the giveaway - I will make something Aussie from this.
So pretty! I don't hang a flag out at the moment as it's impossible to do where we live. We're moving soon however and I'm looking forward to doing it.
I just love your applique block for the Blog Hop! So cute and original!!! I do hang my flag during the holidays, but not all year long. I live in the USA, so I proudly fly the Stars & Stripes!
Beautiful applique. Love your block! Yes I fly a little flag USA. Thanks
Hi Carrie! What a beautiful block! I'm glad you remembered that block and shared it with us! Yes, we fly a flag at our house in Illinois and one at hour place in Florida (winter months)! I have several US flags in wood, metal, fabric, you name it, on display in our house from the end of May into September! YEAH for the USA!!!
I really liked your block and your free motion quilting. I am from Ontario Canada and we fly our flag all the time. We have just had Canada Day and many flags are flying in our neighborhood.
Your block is very pretty! Yes, we do have an American Flag hanging from the front of our garage. We proudly display it with small banners from the Armed Services our family members serve in. My husband has a flag in a case he received from his deployment in Iraq. Thank you for such a wonderful giveaway!
Carrie that mini-quilt is adorable! I always have flags flying!. My dad instilled hanging that symbol of pride and honor for our country. Right now I just have some little ones as a nasty wind took out my larger pole and hanger. I carry little flags in my car I like to leave random places. I got the idea when hiking the Knob on the Blue Ridge Parkway and at the top some one had left a couple of small flags. I also have them in my library and always teach about them to my students. Thanks for the giveaway!
Every year around the 4th of July we fly a flag AND the old Don't Tread on Me flag. Also I hang my patriotic quilt. But this year, I couldn't hang them by myself (Husband had hip replacement surgery recently and couldn't help).
Love your mini-quilt and the doorhanger!
YES I have 2 USA flags on both sides of our entry way and a heart flag block on the door. Proud to be an American. Love your work esp the flag pinwheel. Would love to have your wool door knob hanger.

Love your quilt block. You did a fabulous job.
Being that we live in the USA, we do have an American flag and I used to hang that for every single holiday. We had our house sided and I still haven't put the hanger up again. I'm so afraid to put nails into the siding for fear it might crack or create a place for water to get in. Isn't that horrible? I know it should be fine since we did get a high quality, special ordered siding but I just haven't been able to force myself to do it yet. We really should just put a pole up in the yard since we did love putting the flag out and flying it proudly.
Thank you for such a great post and for the giveaway.
Your block is so cute. Love how the border fabric really frames it just right. Cute. I need a new flag, the old one ripped. I miss it hanging outside.
I really love your little quilt that you made..so pretty...Yes, I do have a flag outside and I also have a patriotic family room and powder room....I love the red, white and blue...thanks for the giveaway....

I live in the USA and I am very proud of my country and the freedom we have. Many men and women have fought and died to give us this freedom. I am very proud to be an American. I do not fly the flag because my husband and I are not able to put one up.But I have small ones that I give out to children at Our celebrations.
Thank you so much for the giveaway.
Love the block you have made - especially the quilting - I am only just starting out on quilting so I just go wherever the needle takes me with no pre planning! I dont hang a flag outside my house although there are lots of flags throughout England at the moment - but the weather here doesnt always warrant it but I do have lots of flags around my house at the moment.
I LOVE to hang the flag but my flag holder broke and hubby got sick before he could fix it. Maybe one of these days, I'll get another up. I hated that I couldn't hang it this 4th of July. LOVE your block!!!!!
Happy Hop Day Carrie, Oh how I love history so thank you for teaching me more today! You work is perfection. and your machine quilting, love the idea of a pencil first. It looks wonderful!! Thank you so much for playing and good luck everyone on the fun giveaways!
We always hang the flag out for the national day here in Norway. It's the 17th of May. If you don't know the Norwegian flag, you can find it on my blog post yesterday. Thanks for the giveaway!
I'm an English woman living in Scotland and I have never flown a flag. It's not something we do a lot of, except for special events like our Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Really enjoyed your RW&B post.
Your mini quilt is a great addition for your July 4th decorating. I like your quilt design choice too. I live in western Canada. For Canada Day on July 1st, I had many little Canadian flags stuck into all my outside planters. Thanks for a chance in your giveaway.
Carrie, your block is beautiful ... as is your post! I wish I had a flag to hang outside my door and may have to go pick one up. I've become a follower of your blog as I enjoy applique and your blog promises much enjoyment! Thank you :)
Carrie, Congrats for having one of your blocks chosen as Top 2!! I agree, you're little flag block is so well done! I would have picked you too!!! You do applique so well.
And YES YES YES I hang the American FLAG when #1 husband isn't cleaning the roof or gutters like he did this morning! Will have to go rehang once the mess is cleaned up and porch is dry!
Blessings
God Bless America
Gmama Jane
Love your Red, White and Blue applique. I live in the SF Bay area and although we have a flag to fly, my husband usually forgets to put it out. I have a quilted banner in my window-a different one for every month and of course it's patriotic for July. They are "cheaters" but my neighbors don't know the difference and I get lots of positive comments! We had our windows coated to keep out most of the UV light a few years ago when we had a white kitty who had skin cancer on his ears, but I benefit from it as it doesn't fade my banners.

Thank you for the chance :o)
I really love your block it is so beautiful! We don't hang the US flag at our house but I do have small ones I use for decorating on fourth of July.
Perfect fabrics in your flag block. It is just beautiful. We fly the USA flag every holiday, to welcome houseguests, and randomly as we feel like it. Just this summer we decided to begin flying the one we were given during my FIL's military funeral. So next holiday we will break it out of that triangular box and wave it proudly. He would like that.

Oh, Carrie: I'm right at home on your site as I, too, Love APPLIQUE'. And your block is absolutely precious. I'm going to go see your back basting method right after I get done here. I'm a new follower, too. Yes, we display the American Flag most of the time. It is a revered part of our daily lives. This is a sad time, you know, in our country. We shall all have to have firm resolve in bringing our nation back into balance. Thanks for letting us visit. I'm having so much fun today.

It reminds me of what my 2 daughters and son-in-law are doing, serving in the Army and USAF. Thank you for participating in this hop and the opportunity to win something you made!!
From the USA: We usually hang an American flag outside on patriotic holidays, but it is raining today. We don't hang flags in the rain nor do we leave them out overnight. Instead, we have some little flags inside for display.

Oh I love that mini quilt. This year we have no flag because my flag pole won't stay in the holder and I don't have the $$ to get a new one. But I am proud to say that in my little area of PA, we take the flag VERY seriously! I just wrote a post last night that showed that even in a little hicktown tractor pull, EVERYONE stands and places their hands over their heart for the flag and our national anthem! Oh, and I love your other quilts too!

Yes, we proudly wave Old Glory in front of our house. The kids gave my husband a flag pole several years ago, his birthday wish for several years.
I am in the USA, but alas I do not have a flag in front of our house. I'm not sure why we never have because my parents always had one and Dad would bring it in every night and my Husbands parents have a HUGE flag pole that is lit and stays out all the time. We have lived in three different houses and have just never put one up!
Thanks for your comments on my blog. You are sooo nice. I am planning to make your block. It is my favorite.

sowingstitches [at] gmail [dot] com
I like your mini quilt. A nice way to fly a flag.
I am from the US. We have a flag that we hang outside sometimes. This year it was again too windy. We live surrounded by open fields and sometimes when the wind blows it is so strong that it blows stuff away. We have lost more than one flag to the wind in the past several years. So instead, I have a flag quilt that I put on the sofa.
I'm from the US also and we fly our flag as often as possible. Thanks so much for sharing with us!
What a great block and mini quilt!! Godd job tonight at guild Carrie. I hang a flag outside from memorial day to Labor day.

Love it! I so wish I could freemotion quilt!!!
This block is adorable Carrie!
I really like your flag block! And I like you flagging (no pun intended) the history of flags. History inspires so much of what I do. When I began studying quilt history in 1981 (as well as learning to do a little quilting), there was so little published in the way of quilt history. Today there are so many books I can't keep track of them anymore---over 500 alone relating to quilt history. But what fascinates me the most and brings the most excitement are the thousands and thousands of blogs that quilters today are writing. Not only have we entered a new era of quilt history. We have entered a whole new era of women's history!! Keep up the good work on both accounts!
