Ukraine’s participation in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest is in danger due to a shortfall in funds to enable participation.

The Ukrainian delegation requires a total of 580,000 UAH to participate in next weeks contest in Malta, however the delegation currently had just 50,000 UAH in funding secured for the contest. Sofia Rol who is due to represent Ukraine at this year contest was joined today at a press conference by Roman Keryk, the Executive Producer for the Ukrainian delegation. The delegation is calling on patrons to donate to ensure that Ukraine will be able to make it out to Malta.

We are actively preparing for performances in Malta. And the main issue, in the preparation of Sofia – Is the question of financing Ukrainian delegation that will travel with her to contest (12-13 people). By November 13 we need to collect 580 thousand UAH for this trip – this is the minimum, which includes the cost of hotel and ticket costs at the site.

Today the United World Cultures Foundation donated a total of 50,000 UAH towards the cost of Ukrainian participation, while the Ministry of Culture has also donated an undisclosed amount of money towards the fund. In the event that these funds are not secured Ukraine will be unable to attend and the country would be unable to compete in next years contest as well.

This latest news follows a weekend of reports in the media of the United Kingdom, Sweden and other nations that Ukraine may be unable to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kyiv. The reports have been denied by Zurab Alasania the outgoing head of the Ukrainian national broadcaster.
