A woman was killed and another nine injured this afternoon after a bakkie and light motor vehicle collided on the Mitchell’s Pass between Worcester and Ceres in the Western Cape.

ER24 paramedics, along with Metro Rescue, arrived on the scene and found both vehicles on the side of the road. Both the bakkie and light motor vehicle had sustained a large amount of damage in the collision.

On inspection, paramedics found one man lying trapped inside the bakkie while a man and woman lay trapped inside the light motor vehicle. All three of these patients were found in a critical condition.

Seven other patients were found on the scene, three of them seriously injured, while the four others had sustained minor to moderate injuries.

Rescue technicians from the Metro Services had to use specialised rescue equipment to free the three trapped patients from the vehicles.

Once freed, paramedics treated all the patients and provided the critically and seriously injured patients with advanced life support interventions.

All the patients were thereafter transported to Ceres Provincial Hospital for urgent treatment.

Unfortunately, upon arrival at hospital, one of the critically injured patients succumbed to their injuries.

The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations .
