'''Roxbury''' is
a neighborhood at the geographic center of
[[Boston]].
It shares borders with the South End, Jamacia Plain, Dorchester, Mattapan,
and
Roslindale. First settled by Europeans as an independent town in 1630, it was annexed to Boston in 1868. Over the years
Roxbury
has

absorbed

waves of immigrants; after the English, the Irish arrived
in
the

mid 1800's, followed by Germans in the early 1900's, who were followed next by a large Jewish population. The most recent cultural changeover happened during the "White Flight" of the 1950's and 60's, where an influx of new African American residents migrating from the south arrived alongside immigrants from the Caribbean. Today the neighborhood of Roxbury "serves as the heart of Black culture in Boston"
.

===By train===

The main T stations are the three '''Orange Line''' connections along the South East Corridor. '''Ruggles''' is by far the largest and has the most bus connections. This station also accommodates '''Commuter Rail''' trains running into the city and out to Providence, Franklin, and Needham. The next stop '''Roxbury Crossing''' gets a lot of use from the nearby student population, while '''Jackson Square''' is used by many residents of Upper Roxbury. If you are headed to Franklin Park by train, consider staying on another stop to '''Stony Brook'''.

+

===By bus===

+

The terminus of the '''Silver Line''' can be found in Dudley Square. This BRT route runs into downtown, to the airport and other locations. It doesn't head much further into Roxbury however, so you may have to switch to the local busses. Popular routes include the '''#23''' and '''#28''' which run to Ashmont and Mattapan stations respectively. The '''CT2''' and '''CT3''' are part of the cities cross town loop system and will take you to either MIT or BU Medical. The '''#66''' another helpful crosstown bus can be picked up from the '''Roxbury Crossing''' station.

+

===By car===

+

Driving a car here is still generally not a good idea. Parking spots are more available, and it's not as competitive or congested as downtown. However, traffic can still back up quickly, and unpredictable drivers are not uncommon. Occasionally making unsignaled U-turns or deciding to double park for mysterious reasons. Often the driver is lost and desperately searching their phone to find the correct turn to make. Driving can be done, but definitely consider public transit or a ridesharing service first.

For a neighborhood of its size and population, Roxbury seems to have a dearth of drinking establishments. Don't worry, there are PLENTY more in neighboring areas.
