Sudipta Sinha, Ph.D.

Sudipta Sinha is a regional and structural geologist with over a decade of experience in the petroleum industry, currently working as a Lead Regional Geologist. Sudipta received his Ph.D. in Geologic Sciences (Tectonics) from Masaryk University (MU), Brno, Czech Republic in November 2014, which he completed while concurrently working as a professional geologist. His dissertation thesis topic was “Factors controlling a microcontinent development during continental breakup: The Elan Bank case study.” He carried out his program under the supervision of EGI Research Professor Michal Nemčok and Prof. Rostislav Melichar (MU). Prior to earning his Ph.D. Sudipta received a bachelor’s (BSc) in Geology (2000) from Presidency College, Kolkata and further completed a master’s (MTech) in Applied Geology at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (2003). He was also recipient of a special award from the Geological, Mining & Metallurgical Institute, Calcutta, India for excellent academic performance in an undergraduate program.

Sudipta has contributed to four EGI research projects, most notable for him being the two East India projects for which Michal Nemčok was the principal investigator. Sudipta also served as an organizing committee member of the Sheared Margin Workshop at Snowbird, UT in November 2013, organized by EGI.

Sudipta’s research and professional experience have taken a distinctly global outlook, with work in locations around the world. His most extensive work has been in India (East & West) and East Africa offshore, with additional experience in offshore Madagascar, Russian Arctic Shelves, Indian ocean regions, Southern Australian Bight and East Antarctica, and Appalachian Basin of North America, among others. His work with Michal Nemčok on EGI projects has contributed to the understanding of crustal architecture, rifting style, margin segmentation, and timing of continental breakup.

Sudipta’s specializations and research interest revolve around extensional and transform margins, focusing on the interaction between tectonics, sedimentation, and associated petroleum systems elements. He also has limited experience in foreland and thrust belt regions. His combined academic and professional backgrounds offer a balanced integration of research and analytical skill with the ability to technically assess the crustal, structural, and depositional history of basins for exploration business or new access opportunity. He is well versed in play ranking, risking, and portfolio management for global exploration assets, and is also proficient in corporate governance, team management, and strategic decision making.

Sudipta has acquired a wide variety of technical skill sets that include structural geology and tectonics, tectonophysics, analyzing crustal architecture, rifting style and continental breakup, heat flow analysis, determination of depositional environments, comprehensive basin analysis and sequence stratigraphy, seismic interpretation (3D and 2D), gravity and magnetic interpretation including forward modeling, regional data integration and analysis in ArcGIS environment, preparation of gross depositional (GDE) & risk maps (CRS), and play rankings. Professionally, he is a recognized leader as well as a flexible and self-motivated team player. His experience working with both a multi-national corporation and the diverse research and academic populations associated with EGI’s Bratislava office have helped him to become a strong communicator and adaptable member of a multi-cultural group.

He has published six articles in peer-reviewed international journals and special publications and given several talks at international conferences. He has also served as an editor for two special publications of the Geological Society of London and conducted peer reviews for international journals (Elsevier, IJES) and special publications (GSL). He is an active member of AAPG and AGU as well as APG-India. He has been associated with many other professional activities including session chairing at AAPG ACE-2010 and as evaluator for Geo-India 2015 (AAPG-APG). He has been active as a geoscience educator, being an invited faculty member at Masaryk University, Brno for short courses, and serving as in-house faculty member responsible for several short courses conducted with his current employer.

Matej Molča, M.Sc.

Matej Molčan is a research assistant in EGI’s office in Bratislava, Slovakia. He specializes in petroleum systems modeling, structural geology, and geologic data visualization in ArcGIS. His experience with petroleum systems covers modeling of various pull-apart terranes on a regional scale. He has comprehensive knowledge of extensional and transform tectonic settings. In his field of expertise, Matej has contributed to two major EGI projects led by the Bratislava office, “Tectonic Development Model and Hydrocarbon Potential of the Guyana-Suriname Basin“ and “Petroleum Systems of Sheared Margins” while being actively involved in other EGI projects simultaneously.

His research interests include basin modeling, determination of sedimentary rates and their patterns, and thermal effects of oceanic spreading center passage on adjacent terranes. His future research plans are to learn sequence and seismic stratigraphy in relation to sedimentary basin analysis and to expand on his knowledge of petroleum systems modeling, specifically in 3-D.

Matej is finishing his M.Sc. program at Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic this year. His master’s thesis is focused on “Depositional and thermal habitats of transform margins, Guyana and Ghana case studies.” This involved the study of the subsidence history and depositional rates of the Guyana-Suriname basin located on a passive margin and the thermal effects along a transform margin delineating continental break-up in offshore Ghana. He used well, seismic, and geological data to model the evolution of a sedimentary basin and ArcGIS in grid processing and interpretation of heat flow results from thermo-mechanical numerical modeling. He also holds a B.Sc. in Applied and Environmental Geology from Kingston University, London, and has recently co-authored two articles in special publications of the Geological Society of London.
