Derry opened their Allianz National Hurling League Divison 2B camaign with a single point win in Castlebar as they defeated Derry 1-14 to 1-13.
With the Slaughtneil players absence due to their involvement in the All Ireland club series Derry boss Colm McGurk (pictured) had little option but to reshuffle the deck.
But he must have been pleased.
They led 1-8 to 0-4 at the break.
Mayo enjoyed a good spell late on and almost snatched a draw but Derry held on for the points.
