Ireland soccer captain Seamus Coleman could be honoured with the prestigious Freedom of Donegal award.

The Donegal football hero should be given the freedom of the county, according to Fine Gael Cllr Barry O’Neill.

He has proposed the Coleman motion at the monthly meeting of the council's Donegal Municipal District.

The motion was passed and Cllr O'Neill said afterwards: "This will hopefully take place in 2017.

"It was unanimously agreed at the council meeting and it will now go before the corporate policy group of the council. It will be unanimously ratified, I've no doubt.

"Then during 2017 Seamus Coleman will be afforded a civic reception and the freedom of Donegal."

Seamie, from Killybegs, would join an illustrious list that includes other Ireland soccer legends like Packie Bonner and Shay Given, plus musicians Daniel O'Donnell and Phil Coulte, plus Donegal's 1992 All Ireland-winning captain Anthony Molloy.

The conferring ceremony would like likely take place at Lifford County House.
