What do the European Union, Japan, Brazil, Australia, and China have in common? They all require GMO labeling. The United States, on the other hand, does not. In fact, there’s a strong lobbying effort in the United States to keep this information secret. This is only the beginning of the ways that America’s food laws grossly (pun intended) favor the interests of Big Food over those of consumers.

Kristina Martin, over at Organic Lifestyle Magazine, raises a good question: why are we accepting less healthy, lower quality options from good companies?

Living a healthy lifestyle is all about making the healthiest choices. But what if the best choice (or the information needed to make the best choice) wasn’t available to you because the people tasked with looking out for you and your interests don’t have the same high standards and the corporations don’t deliver the same high-quality products in the United States as they do in Europe?

Her article is a fascinating rundown of the different food laws throughout the world. You should check it out, if you’re interested in the intersection of business, government, and what we put into our bodies.
