#2 THE LAUNCH OF FORMA STRUCTURAL PACKAGING

Earlier this year Design Packaging and Evelio Mattos, Creative Director of Design Packaging and Editor-in-Chief of TheDieline launched FORMA Structural Packaging, a structural-only agency for brands, agencies, and in-house design teams. With a growing client list that includes; Pentagram, Google, Communal Creative, and Anagrama. FORMA continues to grow designing share-worthy and experiential structural product and retail packaging for agencies, brands, and start-ups alike.

#3 BEHIND THE DISNEY X COACH PACKAGING

Tapping into our Creative Production expertise, Coach partnered with DPI to deliver a packaging system for the long anticipated Disney x Coach collaboration and bring it to life. The overall embossed black-on-black design, punctuated by the illustration of Mickey himself; hot stamped in white and red foils allowed him to pop out of the packaging (pun intended) which included; retail packaging, product packaging, and specialty gift packaging to name a few.

#4 A FRESH NEW LOOK FOR DKNY PACKAGING

In collaboration with London-based Commission Studio and FORMA Structural Packaging we redefined shopping bag functionality, production process, and user experience. The final product; a shopping bag closure that has never been done in the retail market — cinching shut with the pull of the ribbon tails to create an interactive, tactile experience for the consumer. The DKNY packaging system has since gone on to win a bronze Clio, and featured on sites such as It’s Nice That focusing on the textural elements that allow the users to experience the brand through physical interaction.

#5  A COLLABORATIVE TWIST BOX

Since its release, Twist product packaging has received continuous recognition from influencers across the web including TheDieline, For Print Only by Under Consideration, and Packaging of the World. Design Packaging collaborated with New York-based Communal Creative and FORMA Structural Packaging to develop an interactive packaging system that plays with the user’s sense of touch. Creative Production methods were applied to the die-cut soft-touch material that elevated the in-hand interaction and subtle varnishes to accent visual depth and messaging opportunities. The system was translated across packaging that housed one, two and three bulbs.

#6 EIGHT SLEEP FEATURED ON THE DIELINE

Eight Sleep designed by our friends at Anagrama, is minimal and clean — an element we captured in the tech packaging solution through structural packaging and Creative Production; developing an elegant sensory interaction that engages the consumer and reinforces the Eight Sleep brand. In collaboration with the FORMA team, Design Packaging designed the layered unveiling experience to be functionally straightforward and visually appealing with a designated spot for each component. You can truly rest easy knowing your Eight Sleep solution was packaged with care.

Graphic Design USA (GDUSA) showcases outstanding work from elite design firms, packaging design studios, design departments, and production companies. Our team was fortunate enough to receive three awards in the categories of Luxury Packaging as well as Beauty and Personal Care.

#9 SKILLSHARE – PACKAGING DESIGN: FROM CONCEPT SKETCH TO PRESENTATION

The Packaging Design: From Concept Sketch to Presentation class taught by Evelio Mattos was released in early January and is available for FREE through bite-sized online videos via Skillshare. Skillshare is an online learning community covering topics that range from design to business, to music and technology, this series of classes brought structural packaging design education to the masses.

An influential force in the New York fashion industry, Neil Gilks’ hand-drawn illustrations feature men’s faces, amongst other things that might make you blush, playing between strong lines and gestural freedom. Neil added his signature touch to a few of our favorite shopping bags produced by Design Packaging including Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, and DKNY.

In Laura Zielinski’s article, Luxury Brands: Igniting the Imagination, she tapped into Evelio Mattos’ creative mind and experience to discover how all the senses play an integral role into crafting the luxury brand message in retail packaging.
